Hobby Lobby WACO-Cabane Strut Mount Modification_

The Hobby Lobby WACO YMF5 by Pelican is by far one of the most beautiful RTF foamies I've seen. As such, I couldn't pass the opportunity to get one on a great sale at a local Hobbytown USA.

I'm very pleased with everything about this model...that is...except the cabane strut attachment at the fuse.

Pelican decided to glue a plastic tab to the foam and use that as a pad to screw the cabane stuts to the fuse.

Well, this method is flawed to say the least. Just on my thjird flight the same day I maidened the plane, the pads came off the foam and I found mydelf flying the plane with just the outboard interwing struts holding the top wing from fglying away!!!!...

So, I devised this clever modification to securely mount the cabane struts to the fuse.

In fact, this mod will securely attach the top wings of any foamy biplane, regardless of wether the struts mount at an angle...like the WACO...or, straight up...like the GWS Tiger Moths...

STEP 1:
Drill two holes all the way thru the fuse to accept a wood dowel.

STEP 2:
Cut the dowel end at an angle that matches the fuse.

STEP 3:
Drive the dowel all the way thru and mark the other end with a pen

STEP 4:
Cut the dowel at an angle but don't complete the cut all the way thru so there's enough dowel to hold when you drive it thru the fuse.

STEP 5:
Apply a little bit of ELMER's white glue or equivalent to the dowel where it will contact the fuse and insert the dowel thru the fuse.

STEP 6:
Trim the dowel flush with the fuse.

STEP 7:
Mark and drill the holes for the cabane strut.

STEP 8:
screw the wing to the fuse and go fly!!

I hope this mod will help make flying the WACO...and other biplane foamies enjoyable as it should be!!.

Gerry.

Very clever indeed Gerry. I thought this was especially smart.
Trim the dowel flush with the fuse. So you don't have those ugly dowels sticking out.!

Thanks Henry!!...it seems like you're the only one who's seen this thread...it is a flaw on this model and I hope that others will take notice like you did in order to keep the top wing where it belongs!!...
