We watched it live...very cool.

We couldn't understand why he opened his chute early...seemed like he could have broken the free fall duration record easily?

maybe out of respect, he broke the sound barrier and the altitude record.

The older gentleman guiding him through is the original space jumper from 1960's whom the E.T. record still stands. Maybe this jumper wanted to respect him?

That really wouldn't surprise me - I got the impression [from what I read] that Col. Kittinger had been very supportive to Baumgartner. Equally, I believe [but haven't yet seen the video to support this hypothesis] that he had a few stability issues during the decent and he may have used the parachute to deal with these.

Either way, both Col. Kittinger and Felix Baumgartner are remarkably brave people. Bravo.

i think that the stability issues (flat spin) were encountered in the first 90 seconds of the descent and he dealt with them using body positions rather than any chutes or drogues. I'm betting that he left the duration record on the table for Kittinger who has apparently become a pretty close friend of his during the project.

Awe-fully cool all the way around!!!

Joe Kittinger's duration record was set with a drogue chute which slowed his overall
descent. He jumped from 102.8 thousand feet, his drogue opened at 96k ft,
freefall for total of 4:36 and opened main at 17.5k feet reaching
a peak vertical velocity of 614mph (been some debate about the speed over the years).

Felix jumped from 128k feet ASL, no drogue, freefall for 4:20 and opened main at 4900ft AGL,
reaching a peak vertical velocity of 834mph (Mach 1.2). Joe's drogue made a huge difference
in speed thus lengthening his time. At average 120mph freefall (at low elevations) Alex
would have to have waited another 2816ft to have a chance at beating Joe's freefall time record
which means pulling below 2000ft AGL.

Here's the chest-cam view of the spin through to recovery.
Red Bull Stratos Felix Baumgartner On Board Cam (1 min 21 sec)

Looks like he spun a little, tumbled once or twice, almost recovered,
then went into a really high rate flat spin on his back. Pulled his arms in,
maybe to grab for the trigger to release his drogue, then put arms back
out, flipped over and stabilized almost immediately.

As he gets nearer to Earth he is heard complaining that his visor was misting up.
Allegedly this prevented him from being able to read his instruments, so to err on the safe side side he deployed his canopy early as he was unable to get an altimeter reading.

That's mostly just barrel distortion from the very wide angle lens.

In the press conference he said the plan was always to open at 5000ft, and he did.

Regardless, at that altitude you can easily see the curvature of the earth!
