Thanks Richard,

I'm busy learning 3D software and building stuff with my MakerBot Rep 2 printer.

First project will be a small sailboat, but the HP-8 will not be far behind if I manage to learn how to design 3D models. So far my success rate with the software has been slight but progress is being made. The biggest part of the problem being all the irrelevant stuff in any and all 3D packages. Great if you want to compete with Pixar but vastly overkill for 3D printing. You still have to wade through a lot of stuff to get where you want.

That said, I found and lost a reference to a software package that can automate the process of segmenting an object too big to print down to printable sized chunks. I can also use my printer to prototype a model, then have the final version printed by Shapeways, who can print larger, sharper and thinner skinned objects made out of stronger plastics.

There's a guy on the indoor and micro forum working on a non-scale model that looks very good so far.

I wish we had better drawings and sections. I wonder if any of the original plans are still around?

Oh well, I'm lucky if I succeed in making a decent boat hull this year. Not kidding, I'm working alone in an area where nothing works exactly as you might expect and the documentation is about lighting, surface texture and animation.

Help, HELP! I'm drowning in useless documentation.

Pete (still having fun though!)

Here's my 3D progress. Not an HP-8 ... Yet!

Getting my hull design chops down and will post progress here as I go.

The nice thing is once I get the thing designed I can resize to my hearts content. I've already got about five sizes of a whaleboat I downloaded. Hmm... I can now modify that!

Everything is a learning experience.

I've attempted to do the Forward Fuse.

The part behind that will be the hard part.
I'll have to model the V tail later as I've run out of time today.

Anybody want this portion of the work just ask. FREE :-)

Hi Bob,

Please send me a copy. I'm not sure if and when or even how I might get around to printing it but it looks pretty good. I can open most common file types.

Thanks

Bob,
I am very interested in the files of what you have done on the HP...
This is very helpful and will help make my finished model more accurate.
Many Thanks

Well I dunno about more accurate.
I've traced the Drawings that have showed up here in this thread.
Then I'll made a few minor adjustments to "ease" the Surface creation process.
Slight line/curve differences make big differences when creating surfaces from edge curves.
I managed to get a fairly smooth blend between the surfaces eventually.

I'll extract any file type you guys mention IF it's in my cadre of Do-able types.
Then I zip it up and post it here.
That would be the intermediate version ( no tail ) .

The tail end is not going to get any attention for a few days, however.

Life gets in the way of modeling occasionally.

Thanks Bob,

The list of files my software can open is about a page long. I don't have enough experience to know what might be best or most compact etc. so just post something and we'll see what happens.

There should be two files in this ZIP
Try them both or not :-)))

I could also do acis or stl.

I know STL should be a printable file for you printer guys.
It STILL NOT DONE just the forward fuse part.

I can print STL directly and also bring it into at least two of my 3D apps. I haven't tried downloading yet since currently my only connection with the world are my phone and iPads, none of which can handle ZIP gracefully.

I'll lug my Mac Air someplace with WiFi later and give it a shot. I think I'll take my 17" Mac Book Pro along since the App Store will load copies of the Strata software automatically.

I'll probably get around to commenting by this afternoon.

Question concerning my boat hull:

It's just an infinitesimally thin shell now. Is there any command that can fill the volume? Once I can do that I can subtract a smaller version of the hull and then add structure. Right now I'm stuck.

Thanks for the files and any advice you can supply including saving to another app.

Not sure of your Program's capabilities but ...

possibly you could offset the current surface by the thickness you want
and them make them "solid" some how in your program.

Terms like EXTRUDE surface also come to mind.
OR SHELL
Or maybe just setting LINE THICKNESS might work.

But I'm guessing and full of hot air this AM

Here is another NEW piece that I made the foam parts for !!!
Although no mention of me in them.

There are several threads for these Flyguy and Flygirl models in RCG

This is the CNN clip from this morning.

And HLN did a shorter take this am too.

Awesome.

I just downloaded and opened the ZIP file. I"m in a WiFi hot spot and it took about two seconds.

Thanks, I'll check this out in more detail at home.

One of the things in the ZIP file came up easily in Strata as a half fuselage. I was able to mirror it without a problem.

The second thing in the ZIP file opened an expired version of Rhino. Of course there was a big dialog box between me and the open file. it was a link to the Rhino web site. I cancelled out having spent my discretionary money for this month. Next month is the WRAM show so my wild spending is on hold until after the show. It looks like Rhino may be what you used to make it. I couldn't get that file open in Strata but I only tried once and it may not have been the full version of Strata.

I'm a little tired after running around downtown NYC for half the day so it's not a good time to experiment. Maybe I'll take another look at Rhino later.

Nap time!

Just tell me what file type is your programs Native format and I'll see if I can do that.

Apparently Rhino on the Mac is a free beta right now so I'm going to a WiFi area and downloading it.

My Strata files save as s3d. I think the beta of Rhino is going to expand my range. As I learn things in one app things get easier in other apps.

So it's another shopping trip downtown with at least one stop in a WiFi hotspot.

I tend to sleep well after a busy day running around. Besides, I need new headphones for some music stuff I'm doing. My Bose Quiet Comfort are too HiFi for the job. They pick up the hiss of the bow on my fiddle strings and my el cheapo's are falling apart.

Later. Thanks for your help and interest.
