4" Zero

You may be familiar with this video on Youtube:

How to make the micro ZERO (9 min 57 sec)

I just built the Zero and test flew it in the kitchen last night. Very limited space so the best I managed was 2 circuits. It's on the heavy side at 4.15 gram AUW but the wires to the coil are thicker than they need to be and my connectors are also quite heavy. The horisontal stab could be thinner and the wing TE could be thinned down a bit as well. Something to do for the next one. Prop is from the Cheerson CX-10 quad. It has a 1mm bore so I used some 1mm heatshrink to make it fit the motor shaft. It should be painted but I might just fly this one as is and leave the paint for the next one I build.

I "Toonized" some other planes so we might build a whole squadron of these little models.

Done!

It's easy. Find a drawing doing an image search in Google. Open in Paint and save with new name. Open old name file in a new Paint window. Resize one of the drawings. Uncheck "maintain aspect ratio" and set horisontal to 70 (or less if you prefer). Go to the other drawing and use the select tool to copy the rudder. Paste the rudder onto the resized drawing.

2mm hot wire cut beaded styro, 4mm motor from Bidproduct, 20mAh Fullriver lipo, own mfg. actuator with 3x1 magnet.

I just made a new kit from 3mm Depron Aero. With some sanding it's only slightly heavier than the styro but stronger and looks nicer.

Nice work!

Weekend after this is the Maker Faire in NYC. I'm going with a friend and his kids. I'm going to keep my eyes open for affordable (or build able) XY laser or router devices. Not that I can't cut by hand but I like the idea of repeatable precise shapes and incremental changes as I refine a design.

I'll probably have to sell my Makerbot. Nice toy but it takes up prime real estate in my workspace. It's also very finicky about setup.

Pete, you won't save money on a laser buy building your own compared to the cost of importing one from China. Whatever you do, do not buy one of the $500 desktop lasers. They are utter crap.

Here is a picture of the Zero that I laser cut from Depron Aero. I forgot the rudder over in the workshop.

Thanks for the advice. The Maker Faire is huge, I hope I can see most of it before I collapse.

Making vs buying, the advantage tends to be learning a lot about the hardware. I'd rather buy than build because my space is so limited. I've been through build vs buying before and decided that a man of my age (76) should not waste time building!

That doesn't mean I'm going to buy either. But I am going to shop.

Pete
