I just finished my CX2 and I must say it is a work of art.

Can't wait to fly it.

One question, I look at the control throws and by appearance, they look rather small.

Has anyone found the recommended throws to be too small or are right on the money? How's about in windier weather?

I ask for two reasons. One, I want this right for the first flights and two, because I may have way more throw on my other models and may toy with the idea of reducing them.

Thanks

Frank

Its all a matter of taste Frank. If it responds too slowly for your taste, then increase the throws, if its too quick, reduce them.

If you always find yourself twitching the stick a little here and a little there, and can't seem to smooth out your flying, you should try reducing the throws. But you should leave enough throw available for the necessary but not so frequent abrupt manuever, or correction against a gust near the ground. Some guys like using Expo for this, but I am an advocate for just setting up the max throw dependant on either taste or mechanical limits whichever is reached first and leaving the input/output ratio linear.

Enjoy your CX2.

Mike
for me the recommended throws are too small - fyi

I have gotten all too often caught with not enough rudder to kick the tail around when the wind picks up with my LightHawk and LightSpeed. When the rudder horn broke and I moved it further in and also increased my throws, then I got the throw to save myself when the wind picked up.

Then again, I have never been told that I fly smoothly so too much throw is possible in my case.

I will fly it first as it was written as see. I may increase rudder. That rudder does look narrow and the throw seems small - visually but then again it may be enough.

Looking forward to finding out......

thanks

Hi Frank,

I think there are some caveats here.

1.) In the photo, it appeared that you have installed a ballast system. Depending on where your CG is located, it can take more control authority to get the ship to perform the way that you want, especially the elevator if you're flying with ballast. I learned that principle the hard way once on a windy day. I assume that you will not have the ballast in for the maiden testing.

2.) IMO the CG is a very important element for these DLGs. If you prefer to fly your plane a bit tail heavy, the the control amounts will be less. If you like the opposite (nose heavy), then it will take a bit more control throw and have more stability.

I think that getting the CG located in an optimal position will help, especially for the maiden flight. I found that Roland's instruction to set at 86mm made the plane much too twitchy for my skills. I know that GMo sets his around 80mm for normal thermaling. At the moment my X2s are around 82-3mm, and I'm going to play with 80mm during practice today.

Sorry, none of the photos were mine. I stole them from other's postings. No ballast system so far. I tend to fly the plane for a bit so that I first can get the Cg set where I want it and then make the ballast, should it be nec. From some of the comments, It would be nice to be like Mike and Mark Drela and forgo ballast. I have seen Mark in up to nearly 20mph wind nominal without ballast with a SG.

I tend to setup the plan neutral to very slightly positive. It takes just about the entire dive from full launch height before my other planes will pull out and that is just barely. If I go too steep, I still would hit the ground.

I thought the popular consensus was about 84mm so I was aiming for that. Will find out tonight if I am close. I still can shorten the servo wires to save a little but I think I will drill the holes for the antenna (top and bottom) and then balance it with some lead tape I have to about 84mm. With such small throws, I would think I would need a rearward Cg. Everything else is pure stock and set as Roland suggests. Only the Cg is a little forward of the written mark to hit and that was only because so many liked it there.

Now to hope for some good weather this weekend......

Frank

The next Tyohoon is coming

It is forcast for the next Typhoon "Saola" to hit Taiwan "bulls eye" by mid of this week. Unfortunately anoter good chance to be confronted "eye in eye" with the forces of nature again soon.
We will begin our defensive measures by tomorrow and will be left to wait and see of what will come....
It is most likely that during the time the Typhoon passes over Taiwan, no transport service will be available and all scheduled shipments will delay for one week. It is not possible to estimate, how much our production will be influenced and most likely delayed at this point.

Below some pictures of what happened to our landing strip in the south of Taiwan, where about half went missing during the last Typhoon....

Wow George, looks like I made it out of there just in time - hope your culvert kept your driveway from washing away!

Thanks again for the pushrod set - and for helping me along the poor mans way into concept-land. I got her re-maidened earlier tonight ~6:30pm in the still air after the storms. Haven't tuned any flight modes yet, but just dialing in a launch preset at 1/2 power and flying in section I can tell that the Concept is a completely different bird from any other gliders I've flown. She feels incredibly sweet in the air, and its only gonna get better in the morning as I dial 'er in more.

Thanks again!!!

Typhoon update

Right now wind speed exceeds 60 mph... forcast max wind speed over 120 knots will be reached in 36hours. Rain is terrible, drops the size of a finger nail, branches and debris flying horizontally..... It's gettin wet.... Very wet....

Some places measure already over 3 feet of rain.... Outside the sound of hell.

So far everyone OK

Roland
