Scratchbuild glider project - 2 metre wingspan

Hi all,

Forgive me for being a new member!

I've got to make a 2 metre wingspan glider for a school project and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

So far I have, a glue gun.

I would like it to be made out of foam.. however in the UK I'm not sure the best type or place to get it from.

If anyone knows any good links or any guidance I'd be very appreciative!

I'm no masterclass at this but may follow this thread up with pictures of what I come up with!

I can use cad etc, I'm just unsure how thick / wide the wings should be, how long the main fuselage should be in relation to the 2m wingspan!

All the best.

There are several in this thread

In the UK people often use Depron foam for scratch builds .

Are you making it radio controlled , or just free flight ?

Also do you mean a genuine 'glider', (as in un-powered), or a motorized glider, probably electric powered ?

Blocks of foam can be bought from B&Q and other diy shops under the insulation sections you can make the whole glider or just parts by cutting, sanding or hot wiring to get the shape you want.
The other options are flat sheet foam like Depron or MPF or foamboard , you can buy Depron on ebay in sheets , its an easy way to build you just cant use certain glues , hotglue should be fine and UHU Por , Gorilla glue etc available at some craft or diy shops.

Lastly find a printable plan and be a realistic about the end goal, with time and a little skill you can make amazing little planes and gliders as some of the posts on here show.

Aak away i am sure we can find you something that will suit your needs

Depron from ebay + hot glue (plus a good knife) will have you sorted. The foam at my local Wickes/B&Q is the thick polystyrene type, it's not all that nice to work with compared to Depron IMO. Much cheaper though.
