5th through 8th Grade project Idea's

This weekend at church, the 8th grade math and science teacher approached me with the idea of bringing in some electric planes to work with the 5th through 8th graders on a science project. With the idea of teaching them some basic concepts of flight appropriate for their age group and to introduce them to RC planes. I would like some idea from you all on some models to include. He has secured a grant to purchase the planes/materials with. I'm not sure what the budget is, but I imagine he would like to pickup a couple of planes for each age group. I've suggested the Slow V, Aero Ace Airhog (more as a toy) and a Parkzone P51D.

I would aslo like some ideas on possible build ups, in case he'd like to turn it into a on going project. I have volunteered my time and planes to help (any excuse to fly, right!).

Please let the idea flow.

Thanks

Jason

another option for a plane would be the red halk. they are going at my local hobby shop for $90.00.

for the build-up idea, why not introduce them into sailplanes? kits are cheap, easy to build, and you can teach them about thermals, introduce them into aerodynamics, and why a bigger wing can find more lift.

You might want to pick up a couple bundles of Dow Bluecor FFF. You can build scads of planes with it and transfer components when needed. Lots of free plans too.

A down side is the need to put very sharp blades into young hands. May not be worth the risk.

Will,

I had thought of using the BlueCor, but most of the plans I've seen have been for 3D profile planes. Do you know of a site where I could find some good plans for a trainer type plane?

just wondering, how much wind can bluecore models handle, and with the full bodied models "not profile," are they somewhat stronger then gws foam fighters?

The Zagnutz wing can handle a lot of wind. The Zagnutz is probably one of the easiest planes to build and fly.

Don't know much about the GWS foam fighters accept a lot of people have them.

the gws planes do look like alot of fun, my major issue is that they look brittle "looks as if it is made out of beaded foam. not very strong." if it was epp, it would be a diffrent story.

also, whats a zagnut wing?

These are great IMHO. I still have the original one I made plus lots of others scaled to different sizes. Tape them up good and they can be quite durable…for FFF.
