Yep, me too. This Pope seems to be much more inclusive and understanding given the failings of humans by their nature, and one trying to 'change' that behaviour through the teachings of the church, not by demonizing, casting out and persecute sinners as we have seen in the past. I give him a high five and I'm not religious. I respect this Pope!

Absolutely not - that wasn't what I meant at all

What I was observing was that despite her long standing anger at the double standards of Catholicism, she still worships at their altar and was dismayed when her son dismissed his faith!

She understands why - but still practices - a real dichotomey

The amount of emotional blackmail used in my wifes case has really been a eye opener, she has been shunned. It has completely broken up a very close knit family. Other stories coming out of the church have been very similar stories.

I can't contradict your wife's experience, because it does happen.

I just think that it's fairly rare.

I think it depends on the church, some are a lot more legalistic than others. it has happened quite a few times, to the point where a 1/3 of the church broke away from the congregation.

As far as my wife is concerned what has happened is not supported by the Bible but cannot convince her sister of this.

Hate to say it guys, but the only part of this that says atheists go to heaven is the title of the article. Read the article, you might notice a journalist using a small quote and then cutting it off mid thought before closing with a different proof text and then insinuating a major paradigm shift.....kinda classic journalism fodder that "sheep" tend to bite on. And irony above irony, the same proof texting move that atheists tend to call out Christians for making when dealing with the Bible.
