Build Log
Flite Test Versa wing

So, I've been wanting a cheap flying wing to do some proximity FPV with, while not worrying about the airframe. And after looking around at various designs, I decided on the versa wing, designed by Josh Bixler, part of the Flite Test crew. If you haven't heard of them, check them out: http://flitetest.com/. They have some great plans and videos.

Here is the build for this wing, and the plans are towards the bottom of the page. FT Versa Wing Build

The wing will be made out of Dollar Tree foam board, then covered with tape for durability, and water resistance.

My electronics:
Motor: NTM Propdrive 28-26 1200kv
ESC: Plush 25amp
Servos: HXT900's
Props: APC 8.4e
Reciever: Corona RP8D1 9 channel 72Mhz
Battery: 3s 2200-2650mAh

For my FPV system, I will be running 1.2Ghz, with a simple OSD just to monitor battery voltages.

Let's get started! Put some music on, grab a cool drink, and start tiling those plans together!

Then, after that, transfer the plans to your foam.

I cut the wings out! I have the spars to cut, and the winglets, which I'm going to make out of chloroplast (that plastic stuff you make signs out of).
Also, some of you may be wondering why I transferred all the lines of the plan to the foamboard, the reason for this is that I cut my parts out freehand - I don't use a ruler.

P.S. Sorry about my crappy pictures, I keep forgetting to charge my camera battery

Okay, got a little free time today, I got a wing put together.

First, I dry fit everything to make sure it all went together right, and it fit perfect. So I went ahead and taped the top and bottom portions of the wing together on their leading edges.

Then, I flipped it over and pre bent everything to establish the creases, and set those creases with some hot glue.

Time for the servos. I glued/ zip-tied the servo on.

After that, I glued the wing all together. Doesn't look too bad to me! Time for the other side.

Now, the waiting on HK begins.

Got the wing put together, and there are a bunch of wires and stuff inside the wing such as an OSD, and power filter, and all the wires that I will be hooking up my camera and stuff to. I also got the top half taped up!

Here's my shot at a DIY power filter. A sander style.

Okay! She's done! CG ended up about 1/8th" ~ 1/4" behind the recommended CG. So, we will see how that works out when I get her in the air. She is quite heavy, I don't know the exact weight, but it won't be a floater. The power filter I made works perfectly! full throttle and no lines in my video. I will say this though, with the motor that is currently on it, I feel like it will be quite speedy.

The waiting begins for a free day!

Look at her in her glowing orange goodness!

This is where my 1.2GHz VTX lives, topped with a cloverleaf.

And up front is the amazing PZ0420 camera from SecurityCamera2000

It's hard to tell, but I have my antenna running in the inside of my wing, then took a pushrod guide and fed it out the back, then glued the winglets on. This should do a good job of keeping my antenna under control.

And, a home for the battery of course! It almost fits to where that door will close flush, but not quite.

This is as far as I've gotten so far, but I will be updating this thread as I go along! So feel free to subscribe and follow along, I can try to answer any questions you might have for me.

hard to launch, easy to fly

I have been launching my pusher style versa wing "discus" style, gentle motion toss by holding tip of one of the wings. It's by far the tensest part of flying this wing.

My key suggestions to others are:
- don't bank too much, you'll lose altitude fast
- if doing pusher, it'll be harder to launch than tractor
-I had to create artificial fuselage to get 1300mah battery to balance it out (hence stub on tip). I am getting larger battery so it can be mounted in the wing proper.

That is quite a mod you have going on in the front there! :O

I have flown a good many wings before, so we will see how this one compares.

Got new 2200 mah batteries so I was able to adjust the Cg without the need for a nose cone. Rubber bands grab on to paper clip underneath to hold the battery on. Two provide redundancy. 6 year old copilot provides beginnings of some real cosmetics. V1 rarely gets any aesthetics.

So, what was her weight after all, in all film and with all electronics on board?
I made a Versa but the typhoon keeps me indoors so she hasn't been flown yet.

Mine weighs about 850 g together with 90 g deadweight. I think it's way too heavy for this size, but I'll see how she feels in the air.

I'm using a single 2200 3s batt, didn't push it all the way to the front for safety reasons, so there is some steel chain in the nose tip, poured over with melted glue.
However, I have to say I really hate carrying deadweight. All these battery pods sticking out, deadweights and alike are just results of design imperfections...

A well designed wing should be like Zephyr!

Opened a separate thread for Versa...

Seems almost like i've forgotten about this thread! I've just been doing a couple of minutes of work here and there when I get the time.

I also got the top half taped up! Tell me I'm not the only one who lets his build area get like this during a build...
