60amp Battery Load Bank

Without wanting to risk my Hex and allowing real-time intervention I decided that I wanted to bench test all the batteries that I have based on a specific load.

I worked out how many Amp's my Hex took to hover using a power analyzer so I could determine how long my flight times could be with the different batteries I have.

I decided that I would build a LIPO battery load bank.

Firstly I worked out that my Hex drew 19.6amps on 4S battery at 3.1kg, hovering at 1m.

The batteries that I tested (individually) were 2 x ZIPPY Flightmax 8000mAh 4S1P 30C, and 2 x Dualsky 10000mAh 4S.

The load bank that I built had 4 x Halogen H7 80w/100w (~15amps each @ 12v).

I created some very basic circuits so I could bring in different loads.

The pictures are attached.

For my battery load test / battery capacity test, I also used a helpful device Cell-Log Cell Voltage Monitor USB - and logged every 2 seconds - this really helped to see the power curve/performance of the battery.

The ZIPPY Flightmax 8000mAh 4S1P 30C - really struggled. I managed to get 15min from one and 17min from the other before they started to fall off a cliff at 3.4volts per cell.

The Dualsky 10000mAh 4S were outstanding. I managed to get 26min before they started to fall off a cliff and 3.45volts per cell.

15 minutes is still not that bad at 60 amps. You shouldn't be letting them drop to that low of a voltage either way, they should be stopped at 3.7v/cell unloaded, if those are your unloaded numbers, you should stop the discharge sooner.

"Firstly I worked out that my Hex drew 19.6amps on 4S battery at 3.1kg, hovering at 1m."

My actual load was around 20amps (the load bank can take up to 60amps).

Really disappointing result for the Zippy's.... massive battery sag...
