I once saw one of these boats in a toyshop, but my aunt wouldn't buy it for me on the grounds that they were dangerous. I have spent the last sixty years wondering how they worked, but now I know!

Gluehand, thanks for "pop-pops". I can remember as a small kid playing with mine in a large "puddle" in the middle of my grandfather's mud drive way. Mine had the flat "boiler" and too much candle melted the solder joints. The old 2 cylinder John Deer diesel kind of ran with a "pop-pop" and the whole tractor shook.

Taifun Blizzard

Two Taifun engines. taifuns were produced by Hans Höernlein whom also produced the Profi engines (that do look like oversised Coxes) The original version is 2,5cc and the smaller one has 0,98cc and is made by Ronald Valentine.

OS diesel

Yes it does look like a copy of the ED Bee 1cc and in fact it IS a copy of the famous British ED. Not so easy to find one of these today.

Yeah...I have similar memories, John....I "fried" one too, due to overheating, maybe 55 years go...

This must be one of the simplest applications of the "flash-steam" principle...

Thanks for showing the OS "ED BEE"-copy....from what I've heard, it wasn't exported at all, or did at least not reach Europe....

The OS Japanese BEE was made in about 1950 by Shigeo Ogawa.
I have a feeling there was never a tank supplied as per the English original.

Our Son has lived in Japan for years, and has had is eye out for one for me, but to no avail as yet.

Well the one I bought is the only one I have ever seen on ebay. I think it came from a regular Japanese ebay seller "rucina". The engine is not pictured in the OS 50th anniversary book. Since the take-over of OS it is pretty hard to obtain some info on the early engines, not that the firm is not willing but simply because they do not know themselves. I used to have some contact with Joe Ogawa in the 80'ies. I believe he went to live in the USA. By the way, all the engines offered by rucina are first class condition. Trouble is, I can't find his email adress anymore. I did mail him after the terrible tsunami to find out if he was ok.

Reginald, nice looking Taifun Blizzard.
Did they make a similar diesel (1.5 cc) with a green anodized jacket 1960? I remember my LHS had one that I wanted but didn’t have the cash then. I think the LHS owner kept it and flew it back then.

It must have been a Hurrikan 1.5cc, a very nice running engine, unlike the Blizzard which vibrated a lot.

No not really, they do turn up regularly on ebay. The smallest size 3,5cc is the most difficult to find.

Yes, that’s it, the Hurrikan 1.5cc. Thanks.

Profi 3.5 (.21) all I have are glow versions, no diesels.
The big “V” has a few converted to diesel.
I had a .76 with an 11x11 prop in a 120% size Dirty Birdi. It didn’t really do any better than the .60 Profi, or a Fox .60 in pulling vertical. The prop shaft bolt did break off in flight once and the engine kept running until I heard it “scream” (no prop) and shut it down. No apparent other damage. They are still very nice engines with very unique muffler inserts.
