Build Log
MXY-7 Ohka

I am starting on the build of my semi-profile MXY-7 Ohka Mod 11 Japanese suicide rocket plane.

I plane on having the wingspan around 21 inches when finished. I will be using a simple KF airfoil with a little bit of a taper toward the tip. The material of choice is just your standard DTFB but for the fuselage I will be removing the paper and laminating 6 pieces of DTFB with epoxy and then fiber-glassing them. The wing position isn't yet decided because they are so far forward that I worry that I will have to put to much weight up front and that would make the wing loading crazy. Total build cost should be around $20 which is very good!

Paint Scheme:
For the paint scheme I will be going for is just a semi-gloss white air-frame with the red circles for the Japanese markings.

Power-plant:
Undecided. I set it up as an edf, a pusher prop or a tractor depending on the the where I end of putting the wings. I may even end up going crazy and using an F size rocket motor.

Electronics:
Receiver:
Going to be using either an FRSky VD5M or a V8FR-II (a little overkill)
Servos:
3 9 gram servos. 2 for the wings and an elevator as there is no need for a
rudder on this small of an airplane

Will update the build process once I get further work done.

Have fun in the clouds,
Rob

Build Update

Just got the fuse laid up and I have to say that I am very happy with how the foam/fiberglass went into place. I decided to use a single layer of 3 oz. cloth (I think) in the middle of 6 layers of foam just to add some extra support as I am not sure how the foam will hold up to the speed. I just used the norm for the epoxy: 50/50 on the finishing resin and denatured alcohol. Just used some ammo for my that I had lying around to put some top weight on it. (It's redneck-ville in my shop )

And as I am typing this I just remembered that I will be fiberglassing the fuse once I get the done so I think I may have gone a little bit over kill with the 3 oz. cloth in the middle may have been overkill.

(I think I might have a fiberglass obsession...I have to say that it ain't a bad one, as my R/C addiction is worse )

How will the wings, tail, and motor be mounted?

For the wings I am planning to laser cut a v-shaped lite ply former as a wing spar and the I will most likely be fiberglassing the wing. The motor will be also mounted with a laser cut former and then fiberglassed over it. The tail surfaces will just be epoxied onto the rear deck of the plane and then fiberglassed on to get a good hold.

(fiberglass 3 times in one paragraph...the addiction is real)

Why not make the piston driven Ohka jet version with an edf engine?? I would make the wings slighty bigger than scale if I were making this one and maybe a little bigger.

I think I am now sold on that one! I believe that it was the Mod 22 that had the engine. I tjink that I will have to raise the back a little bit but that shouldn't be to hard. The only problem that I see is getting the intake big enough but since it is going to be a semi-profile I think that I can cover the 64mm edf unit with with the intakes so the airflow would be at a maximum.

Edit:
Skunk, I do think that I made the wings a little but bigger at the cord and also a little bit longer to give a larger surface area as I had the same concern as you.

How about something like this one with longer wings and more flyable?? You could do something about the intakes, maybe a lttle bigger.

I think what I am going to do is build a full fuse Model 22 Ohka and keep the semi-profile Model 11 Ohka as a rocket. The only thing that I do not know how to do is take a 3 view into cross-cut sections.

Maybe you will have to build one along with me after you finish your F-16XL

Edit: I am really torn between the Mod 22 and Mod 43....I can't decide
