F15 conversion to MPF

Since we can no longer buy Depron I am devoting my current efforts to converting
my Depron based Prop In Slot Foamy Jets
over to Model Plane Foam.
It's USA made foam that comes in 2' x 4' format and is very close to 6mm thick.

For this first effort I have done Eliworms' F15
with a little bottom hull change for Slide On Ground Operation.
Ref: Jims, eliworm, article was here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=793637

I still have my old depron original design flying, even after a Hawk strike last fall,
Plus I have a new MPF version flying as well.

If you order an F-15 from HCS in the future this is what you will be getting.
It's a TWO sheet MPF cutting with extra spare parts included
for the Nose , Fins and elevators plus lots of extra foam should you need it. $34.50 plus Shipping.
http://www.hoosiercutoutservice.com/...p.htm#EWF15SOG

I've also created a couple of assembly diagrams. see below with free plans

This plane flies with just 3 channels and is easy on beginners. Simple Yank and bank operation makes it a great Jet Trainer.

You can either Toss it Under hand or let it slide on ground for takeoffs and landings.
Nice simple touch and go's and excellent vertical performance ,depending on your power selection. I use an inexpensive Turnigy 2826-6 motor, 6x4 prop and a 1300 3s pak. Those new Graphine paks stay nice and cool.
I like to OVER estimate the amps so I use a 40 amp ESC but you may want to check you amps with a watt meter and down size slightly for some weight savings.

I have some vids of this plane flying on my Vimeo pages Slide On Ground F15 park flyer (5 min 35 sec)

plus a lot of other vids of my planes.

The PDF below is a 24 x 96" affair if you want to print it out in large format.
Tile print otherwise if your scratching it.

Best of luck with your builds

PS

Look for an MFP version of the MDC F-14 swing wing, F22 and Mig 29
plus thunderai's series of 1/22 scale model like the SU-34, Pak 50 et al.

Hi Bob.. see you running a 3-blader. Have you noticed any differance in prop torque effect? I recently had to use a 3-blader on my mini SU and i'm convinced that there's a bit of a differance..

(Ofcource it could also be that i got something else off!!)

Well, I need to test the other prop choices before making an comment.

I built this for my son who had lost his trainer in a Glide Away last Fall.

We were chasing some Buzzards and he lost his battery in a Hi G maneuver. ( weak Velcro )

The model simply glided away for about a 1/2 mile.
I eventually found it after doing a Video survey JUST before the crops were harvested.

Regardless it is more like a trainer than a JET !
All depending on how you fly it.

That vid was this AM and I simply wanted to show off the machine
to demo it's viability to perspective builders

For me, I like to do a lot of T&G's because I fly at my own field
and there's never anyone here to SHOW OFF for !

Plus, if you've ever taken flight training in a full sized plane
you'll discover that what you do MOST is T&G's.
Pattern work ! talking to the tower and following the procedures .

That's because the most important thing you ever do in a Full sized plane after Take off
is Followed by the most exciting thing which is LANDING !
Everything else is just "training" and familiarity !

Hi Bob, good work. I'm currently flying a revised F-15 so I can test the MPF as well. So far everything is working well with the foam. I have a few minor adjustments I'm making to the tail but otherwise looking good. This version is slightly smaller than my original but still uses the same equipment. I'll be posting a thread on it in the near future. Looking forward to seeing more on your version.

You wont be disappointed !

I flew BOTH of mine at the local get together yesterday.

It's not Depron but neither is Krptonite or Unobtainium !

Ive noticed that MPF is significantly less strong and I feel like I need to add cross members in places I should not have to.

With respect and not trying to be argumentative;

While MPF it is more flexible I don't consider it Less Strong.

Flexibility can be a good thing.

There's Tension strength and compression strength and
whatever Rip strength is called.

It's all Polystryene with minor tweaks in the formula for foaming and density.

I had some old Cellfoam 88 .Nice looking surfaces but It was very stiff stuff.
So stiff that an impromptu landing would result in a lot of cracks and breakage.
I built a Harpy from the stuff and it fell apart after two flights.

I have some of HKs foam too .. how much of that can I sell , hmmmm ?

I have a Beeker and a SimSYM Sam 2X scale from MPF .
The poor ole SimSam really flexes if I get too enthusiastic
and I keep expecting it to shred it's self to death but it just keeps on hanging in there.

I suppose we could compare densitys and other specs
BUT it's all moot cuz we cant get Depron no matter how much we liked it.

If you have an alternate I'm all ears.
I think we just need to be a bit more innovative with MPF. The glory is it's available at a reasonable price in large amounts. Jumping around the forums, there seems to be alot of modelers using it.

Been laser cutting all day Bob and just got around to watching your video. Looks like she flys great. I'm really jealous of the shop. You took what, maybe five steps to walk out and fly....lol.

Thanks,

Don't be jealous !
It's taken me 69 yrs to get something like this.

And unlike clubs, I have to mow this 5 acres every week during the summer.

But sitting on the porch at the edge of the field and flying low a slow
with a nice light lil foamy makes it worth all the yard work.

If you're ever in Indy , gimme a shout and stop by.
