Poll
Dumb(?) question about diving speed.

Let's say your glider is upwind and you dive downwind back towards you.

From an identical altitude (let's assume that's possible) which would be faster...a shallow dive from farther away, or steeper dive from closer in?

I would think steeper would be faster until the airframe reached terminal velocity.

I'm not entirely convinced air vs ground speed is relevant...but I'm all about ground speed.

Let's say its a100' descent at either 30/60/90 with a leveling off at the end.

A longer shallower dive can possibly utilize a"tacking" effect from the wind? While a vertical dive is all gravitational.

I dunno, is a thought that has been bugging me for awhile.

A few months ago we found that a nearly 90 dive is significant faster at the end. Tested with diferent planes.

I guess this has no science worthy of exploratory thoughts.

Everybody knows it's a shallow dive followed by a 180 turn below the shear then another 180 turn above the shear.

Anyone know how to edit a poll?

I want to add "dumb question" as a choice.

Don't know how to edit the poll...
But your question reminded me of this test problem that caused an uproar in Scotland a few weeks ago for being too difficult.....

If you want a scientific answer, you need to give precise parameters preferably with numbers.
If you want a "gut-feeling" answer, your best bet is to ask people who have done MOM racing.
