I saw in another build thread someone mention using a felt clunk in the fuel tank when running gas. Has anyone used, seen or heard of this before? If so, what are the pros and cons and where would I find one?

"Felt Clunks: Header tanks can be used but are generally not needed as Gas isn't as susceptible to foaming as Glow fuel and the carbs seem fairly unaffected by air in the system.
However, the use of a "Felt" clunk is becoming common as they have several properties that make them very attractive.
The "Felt" acts as a very effective fuel filter.
The "Felt" holds fuel causing a sort of pool that insures a constant fuel supply under all conditions.
For instance, on a down line when the clunk isn't in the fuel.
When the tank is not full, the fuel splashes around and small quantities of air enter the system.
If you want to use one, you can get them at most "Weed Whacker" shops."

I'm using the walbro felt fuel clunk in my gasser. I got it from a lawn mower shop. I think I paid 5 dollars for it.
It provides fuel filtering as well as it hold fuel and is perfect if you do hammer heads with your plane

Thank you, I'm very anxious to finish and maiden her. Unfortunately, it has been a slow process trying to squeeze in build time with my hectic schedule. With a trophy wife, a 1 year old, a 2 year old and working 50 to 60 hours a week, its tough to find the time!

Anyone use, used or seen someone use strait diesel as smoke fluid? If so how did it pan out? Seems to me that it would be black rather than white? Is that true?

How about home brewed smoke fluids? Any recipes? Or better yet, what is the chemistry behind the dry smoke oil on the market now?

Thanks for the info. A life saver for a second time on this thread! It looks like mineral oil is the winner. Not much for the idea of cutting it with diesel after reading the threads.
