Why are the OS 160 twins twice as much as the ASP equivalents?

I'm all for buying quality. But......

Made in Japan versus Made in China. One has a famous brand name and the other doesn't.
Actually the OS brand engine would hold its resale value much more than the ASP version would.
There is some risk with getting a not so good engine from ASP though.

There is no comparison. OS hands down.

OS is quality. And made by well paid workers. In China.........

Iv'e had three asp's 2 91's and a 180 they all run great , I plan to buy an asp twin one day for a cub, I think they are a nobrainer...........

Easy to answer, no one will argue that the OS is a better quality engine.

The hard question to answer, is the OS worth the EXTRA money for the extra quality?

I own a Magnum 160 (same as the ASP) which I bought for a price I could not refuse & it has nedded some fiddling (and OS parts) to get it running good enough to keep me happy. My
opinion is it has adequate quality for most users but some people would not hesitate paying extra for the OS.

I own one other twin , an OS 300. John.

Which engine is better depends on your experience, perception, politics and hip-pocket.

That OS 300 Twin is a gem. Still have the one that I used in my Tony Clark Cap 21 ex-champion Jan Van Beek and now ex-me because I've given the plane to flying buddy Marc von Vaerenberg. It is 1-3/4 scale and was extremely light purpose built. The OS 300 can be used for racing.
I did use both the OS and the ASP radial five and I decided to keep the ASP to cut-away for didactical purpose.

I just acquired an OS 1.60 twin, lightly used, for $475. Maybe the question should be is it a good idea to try and find a gently used OS 1.60 Twin as opposed o buying the new ASP ? I wouldn't have paid the full shot for a new OS as it is priced out of my budget, but the used one was within reach. Guess maybe I shoudln't have sold the NIB OS 2.40 Twin I acquired for $600 last year....Shoo

Well the used OS will have about as good a warranty as the new ASP.

One reason is that O.S. designed the engine and the others cloned it.
I have the OS 160 and think it was well worth the money.

I love my OS's, but my ASP .46 never disappointed me at 2/3 the cost when I bought it 15 years ago... it performs at least as well as my .46 SF did. I hear the quality is way better with today's ASP's as well.

But yeah... resale on OS is ridiculous, buy used and it will never lose value.

I would rather pay the same $$ for a decent used OS as a new ASP.

Made in Japan (OS) = world's best quality control made by highly paid (higher labor cost than U.S.) unionized (stable) workforce..

Made in China (ASP) = little or no quality control made by who knows what kind of workforce.

I had an OS 160 once. A guy in temple tx offered me 400 for it. When I showed up with my brother. My brother made the mistake that this motor is going to keep the repo man at bay.
Thje guy sensing my weakness and the need for cash, Low balled me for 250.
O how I miss that motor
