My ESC got wet. Will it work?

Hello,

Found my new ESC in the bin after a clean up, the heavens had opened up and semi filled the plastic bag that my ESC was sitting in!

I have taken off the heat shrink and have hung it out to dry. I cant see anything that may cause probs but im not sure. It was brand new, nothing was connected.

Will i have to go get another one or should it work if i let it dryout?

Crssong my fingers

Ace

If it was just fresh water and no power hooked up, it should be okay. As WarPoet said, be sure to let it dry real well. One trick we use with photo gear that gets wet is to put it into a ziplock bag with a few silica gel packs, should help pull the moisture out of the air.

Dumped mine in Lake erie. Swam out in 40 degree water to get my plane and when I got to it it was seizing like crazy. Unpluged the battery right away. Cut a little bit of the plastic off to let it dry real good, then used a blow dryer and put it on cool heat and blew dry it dry.....waited till I knew for sure it was totally dry...works like a champ!!!!!

Its looking good for the ESC then, i would like to get another bit of heat shrink tubing to cover it. Is there any other way to shrink that stuff other than a heat gun?

If the water was clean, then just let it dry. If the water was dirty, clean with alcohol or WD40. As long as it wasn't powered up, no problem. Wet when powered up, may or may not work again. As thor4944's experience shows, sometimes you get lucky.

Some dude recently torched his whole plane with a shorted ESC, so be careful when you plug in the battery (after it dries )

The fellows on the Waterplanes Forum use Corrosion X Red Label.

Spray it in the rec, esc, servos. they will work underwater.

There is a video on Flite-Test where they show you how to do it, show you want happens and Peter runs motors, servos underwater with no problems.
That same video also shows other ways to water proof/ nothing is quite water proof/ but Peter shows you what to do.

A small can costs about 10 bucks, will do many escs, rec, servos. I have used it, it works.

You can also order it from the company, just google Corrosion X, they sell it in spray bottles, areosol cans and I use it on electric lights on trailers, trailer plugs, anything electrical that I want a good contact electrical.
