Question
Universal joints

Have a question regarding universal joints.

Assuming that the alignment between the prop shaft and motor shaft is as straight as possible which type of universal joint is better. Single or double? Does the double type tend to whip if there is a slight fore/aft movement in the prop shaft? This is for a Sterling Corvette with MACK geared motors.

slight for and aft shaft movement should be reduced as much as possible, collars and washers work great, getting shafts lined up to need only a one joint universal can be done but the doubles work just fine..

Two u-joints is always better. A single requires PERFECT alignment of the shafts, meaning they can be at an angle, but the centerlines must intersect at the exact center of the joint. You'll never achieve this, which is why Aquacraft gives you a SLOPPY single... it's noisy.
Two joints allows for realistic misalignments.
The Dumas dogbone replicates the 2-joint geometry in a simpler format.

And you won't get whipping if the shaft is supported close to the joints.

Over last winter I changed my u-joints to the double style along with supporting the very end of the shaft tubes in my 1/16th Higgins, made for smoother and quieter running at all speeds.
