Based on some prior playing around with bicopters and thrust tilt platforms ( https://www.youtube.com/user/matwelli ) thought it was time to get serious about VTOL

for me, forward flight isnt the GOAL of this, its just part of the package, this airframe needs to be effective both hovering and forward flight, i look at forward flight as being a range-extender , with hovering to do real work being just as important

I have two designs, a quad based, and this, a bicopter

in hovering, it uses motor speed diferential for pitch control, it also tilts the motors slightly, this has no effect

uses motor side/side tilt for roll and yaw

to transition, the front/rear motors tilt to 90 deg, the yaw still works by tilting the front rear motors.
pitch control is controlled both by elevons on the wing, and by pitching the front/rear motors
roll control is by the elevons on the wing, and by the motor roll control, as they are above the CG they will still be effective

this is the maiden flight - the foam wing is for show that part is a while away from being sorted

downfall of this design, is as with all bicopters, effectiveness of roll control depends on the vertical diference between the CG and the motor pivot point, and with this frame its only 50-60mm , and changing the load will affect the control and PID tuning requirements - so my quadcopter design (next to be built) may be a better overall choice

Actually, there's a way to control roll effectively that would not depend on the distance between the rotor til point and the CG: If the rotor had a swashplate and cyclic input. This is the way the V22 can manage to control pitch in an hover while still managing a decent allowable CG range. It is a cargo plane, after all.

are you talking vertical or lateral CG ? i can see it helping with a lateral CG change

the osprey (real machine not rc) is a very cleaver machine, but i am just using off the shelf motors and props, two fully functioning helicopter heads would be cool, but not what i am doing

@Nadine - its an open pilot copter control board, I love using them because you can easily access the custom mixer to do some wild setups I have the tilt forward servos controlled by both pitch and an auxiliary channel mixed together

@lead feather - cheers, its certainly been an interesting experiment

Cool and simple ,, looking forward to what you do with this contraption and I say that with respect as it is the same type of test rig I usually use to prove an idea
