We did! Chris was there and flying in the furball, just like riding a bike.

8 year old JW gets a second chance!

I had this JW 60 lying around gathering dust after it was such a let down, only my fault. I had huge travel on the elevons and it kept stalling and was a pig to fly, it even spent a week in the bush at our local slope, till a mate went and dragged it home for me, nice mate!
So I stripped it down, and in doing so destroyed the fuselage pulling the fibre tape off. Thats how good the 3m spray was, I then shaped a new rounder looking fuz with a 40 mm longer nose moment.
To cut a long story short, I resprayed the wings with a Florist spray adhesive, I couldn't lay my hands on 3M, which was awesome, used fibre tape over 90% of the wing, iron on laminating film and finished with Oracover.
The cg came out at 70mm, and reduced the throws drastically. Here in Durban on the East Coast of South Africa, we have recently discovered some new slopes with powerful lif,t and are heading out there this weekend to try the JW again. Amongst the slope is a Ds site, hence the rebuild, after setting this plane up I will definitely be heading to the back of the moon!
Picture on its way shortly

60 Inch DS Fest - ADSJ Solo Parker 8-24-12

Had to work up in OC Thursday the 23rd so that make enough of an excuse for me to make the drive up to Parker on Friday. Got to the hill about 1 pm, wind was west 21-22 mph avg and found bumpy darkside conditions. Did a test flight with the JW and decided to wait till the brush on the backside settled down - siesta time.

Here are a couple vids I took with my keychain cam.

First is a JW60 DS Special Pig at 110 oz guided by Spectrum 2.4Ghz Warning - this vid is long, I lost patience with the editing process.

Second is an 84 oz dry weight D-60 Joe crashed last year so it made it affordable for me. Hitec A-9 2.4 Ghz guidance.

JW60 Parker Mountain August 23 2012 (16 min 39 sec)

OK it's been a real long time since a JW build and I have a quick question:

Being too cheap to use ultracote, we've been using just colored tape over the strapping tape. I can't remember, though,
1. do you need to spray 3M on the wing before taping with colored tape and
2. do you need to spray it on the balsa elevons?

Thanks!

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes (just in case a third question comes up later!)

After you do all that taping put a layer of NS all over the tape. New Stuff is cheap and will provide a nice smooth surface over your tape. BTW NS is clear when ironed on.

Good luck.

Hey on the subject of foam- has anyone tried spray painting the bare cores before gooping/ taping/ laminating etc? Does the covering still stick?
Cheers
Josh

I recently did this, but I spray painted over a layer of thinned goop that was over all my other layers of strapping tape/goop/strapping tape/goop. I then thin gooped over the paint (very lightly so as not to dissolve the paint too much). Then new stuff over that last layer of thinned goop. It came out looking alright. I'll post pics later. Still have to maiden the beast.
