Here is the build log for my Jpower 50mm Mirage. I am using the following power system.

First thing I noted on this kit is the HUGE outlet nozzle size. The exit area is that for a 64mm fan not 50mm, so a thrust tube and centering ring will need to be installed.

Building notes:

I glued the wings on first with 5 minute epoxy.

Then soldered up my power system. I had to add a little wire to the ESC battery leads, about 5 inches.

I then cut a access hatch on the bottom so I can get the ESC mounted in the fuselage much easier, once the ESC is set and the servo wires routed then I will glue the hatch back into place.

CG w/ bigger lipo than stock

That is going to be a powerful setup, can't wait to see your flight videos!

One thing though: How are you going to achieve CG (which needs to be at the recommended position, or even further aft for better performance) with a much heavier lipo than the stock 850 3s ?

The heavier motor and fan won't counter the added weight in front I guess. Or do they?

Would it be possible to move the fan further back so that you don't have to place the lipo too much into the airflow?

cheers

It s going to be pretty close based on the quick CG check I did. I have not had any issue with any of these Jpower models getting them to balance so far. The motor fan and required lipo always seem to be a near perfect swap out.

Here is what I finished today. The fan is mounted with hot melt glue and the thrust tube and centering ring are installed. You can see how oversized the fan outlet is by the thickness of the centering ring. Also worht noting is that I removed the "lip" on the lower half of the Wemotec housing, this is because the elevon servos wires go in the same slot as the fan lip would go so I just removed the lip.

Don
So what are the dimensions of the centering ring you came up with?

I used your Mirage 2K trust tube template/centering ring for the Jas-39 and it fit perfect! I had to remove 32mm from the outlet end of the thrust tube so it would fit flush. She looks great, thanks Don!

Grippen Jas-39

Wicked 4800 KV motor
Wemotec Microfan
Dynamically balanced
CC Lite Ice 50amp ESC
TP 4S 1300 lipo

I'm at 32 amps / 442 watts with this set up.
I will maiden the Jas-39 this weekend.

The Mirage is all done. I ended up adding 1/2 ounce to the tail to make it balance at 100mm. But even with the weight it is ~16.5 ounces ready to fly with a 4S1300 lipo so with 400 watts that is 390 watts per pound!

The Mirage flies rather well. This and the F-16 are my two current favorites. This is so stable in the air. Here is the video from today:

Hi Don,

Thank your for all those great pics and infos !

I think I'll have to try one of your great combo very soon :-)

On your last picture, I cannot understand clearly where your CG is. May you please give the distance from the leading edge of the wing, near the fuselage ?

Many thanks !
