Try this link

Arijan Hucaljuk is the offending RC Glider Pilot. Dont know him from Adam and I don't fly F3J. I dont know the rules but intentional contact seems like a foul or a penalty, red card, flag or PK to me.

So what did the CD rule?

Good that there isn't much (or any) money involved in RC toy gliders competitions

My biggest worry is the precedence this sets with other competitors. When something like this happens and it seems to work (and even rewarded) I am worried that the sport overall will take a different direction.

I have little chance of flying against this guy given my level of involvement in the sport and where I live, but who is to say that in the next contest this is the new tactic to help secure a top podium spot? If you ignore the total lack of morality in the act, it is quite cleaver.

We have super light models that we can blow up on launch. We can severely dork our models to secure the time and landing points. We can even choose equipment that is at the bare minimum to save weight. All of which risk our expensive models BUT are our choices based on how we value those models and how badly we want to win. In the case of someone trying to knock me out of the sky to get the reflight, that is not my choice, and it is not an accident of competition.

From what I have read, we are done judging the pilot. I have started to judge the judges. To the governing bodies, is this acceptable behavior? Should we start to order double carbon F3J ships with stainless steel leading edges?

It's obvious what he did. My guess is because he's a top pilot they were either were afraid to come down on him or just didn't want to. If it was some no name schlep they probably would have banned him for life.

The rules only have a "if you try and intentionally break a rule it's up to the director rule" which is in this contest was a bogus process. The guy could have been his dad or like a sponsor.

Long story short the sport is obscure, small and inbred so stuff like this is going to happen. If you choose to compete in these competitions you would be more successful if you expected these things to happen !

Goes against what we think about modeling here in the US where folks have fun, fellowship, and help each other enjoy competition.

I guess I am more "American" than I thought I was. =;^)

I have been involved in a number of obscure, small and inbred sports over the years (they are the most fun) and one of the consistent themes by those who compete is "how do we attract more people into the sport?" Also in these cases, the sports had distilled into "how does the competing population support the few top competitor's goals?" F3J is one of the few areas that is gaining in popularity. It is a ton of fun and I would hate to see it go the same way.

Put another way, how would you feel if it were your first contest and you happened to be the unfortunate target for this tactic? I dare say most of us would not have a second contest. Just something to consider when unchecked behavior becomes policy.

Rant set to "off".

When it comes to contest judges and ruling bodies this incident is a prime example of how fear rules the lives of so many people in this day and age. The concept of enforcing the RIGHT thing to do has become a lost art. Just look at how governments and corporations act today. There are hardly any good examples left to follow...

Having been in the sport for many years and participating in 3 Worlds Championships as US Team Manager, I can say that in all of that time I have only seen or heard of one other incident similar to this - quite some time ago. This is NOT a trend, nor do I see it becoming a trend. Conversely I have witnessed far more examples of great sportsmanship than of poor sportsmanship. As with any competition there may be those that are misguided and overzealous.

Note that you can also see such stupid behavior in car racing...

I do think there should be severe penalties for intentional crashing. Determining intention may not be easy! The film in this case makes it far more obvious.

F3J is a very fun soaring sport and will continue to attract enthusiastic pilots despite the stupidity of a very small minority of pilots.
