Some Slope historie - World Speed trials
In Mai of 1999 the MCS Mid Columbia Soares (MCS) CD Wil Buyers invited slopers to attend the 1st World Speed Trials. Originally intent was to break the official FAI record during this event, but the technical requirements for such undertake where heavenly underestimated. The paperwork and the achievement of the technical aspects (certified / verified watches up to 300km/h , judges etc) of the records are often more difficult than the actual flight itself.
With 3 world class slopes around Kennewick/ Richland ( 3 driving hours east of Seattle ) the conditions often exists to reach high front-side speeds on the 2 x 200m horizontal flight during the 10 min window.
The set price money of total $5,000.00 raised some increased interest in the glider community to compete, unfortunately with this money in mind some took the flying a bit (too) serious IMO.
If I remember correctly (?) there were ~ 25-30 competitors, but many more spectators?
Wind directions over the 3 days weren’t perfect for new records, instead of the normal SW for Eagle Butte, we had mostly North wind condition, therefore it had to be flown at Kiona Butte, the much better North slope at the same Ridge known nowadays as SDR wasn’t discovered as this time.
Anyway lots of fun over the 3 hot days, Combat flying in the evening even Dieter M flew foam.
Espen Thorp provide an introduction into F3F (which just started to be more popular in the USA) and Dave Reese and Paul Naton demonstrated some DS flying at the top/ BS of Kiona.
Hope there are some additional picture out-there and maybe someone has some recollection of achieved speeds (by today (DS) standards they could be called almost slow).
