Build Log
Look what I found..

Was out lurking around the LHS and saw this real beat up box. Asked the owner about it and he said he has had it over 5 years.. Never got around to building it.. So I asked what he wanted for it.. so 3 bills later I got a Great Planes PT 17..

One of my favorites for reliable power iss the Scorpion 4025-12 (440KV). There is a new SII series now but basically identical specs. A 16/10 2 blade should show around 1400watts at 58a or so on 6S, I used 80A Turnigy Plush Esc and Turngy Megabec8 Bec(2s only) with complete success. Iran the Zippy 5000/40C/6S for the esc and usually an 1800/2S/20c for the bec. A HK alternative motor would be the SK3 5055-430 with a 16" or the Scorpion 4025-16 with 18/10 or 12 pitch prop. fwi Doug B

can i use the turnigy sk3's with the same numbers? ie 40 25 at what ever the kv is??
Those Scorpions are nice but a tad pricey... Remember this is a Trainer aircraft.. not looking to do 3d or wild aerobatics.. just something that will replace the 91- 120 slimers...

wings are joined.. Nice thing about joiner pockets is you just pour the Epox in and shove the joiner in and scrape the excess onto the roots..

The Sk3's I've purchased have all proven to reliable performers. No reason to think the 5055-430 won't deliver 1400w or so to fly this plane.
I prefer the SK3 over any of the other motors offered by HK now.
I mention Scorpions because they are 100% reliable, the extra costs warranted on major builds. I;ve owned 14 Scorpions to date, never had an issue with any. Doug B

jpt62 You match up motors with the motor weight and KV. Its sometimes confusing, ie: Scorpions give its model # by the armature measurement, SK3 series are measurments of the outside casing and length of the casing. As long as the weight is similar and the KV is similar they should perform about the same levels at the same amps at the same voltage. The Biggest difference between a SK3 and a Scorpion is the amps they can safely handle continuously. Most SK# in these sizes are rated around 65A max, Scorpion's superior magnets and build allow 90A. The Scorpions will also be at least 10% more efficient, SK3 running around 75%, Scorp's around 85%. fwiw Doug B
