It all began.......

So I was thinking about my first radio today and I remembered this photo of me with my first RC plane. That's where it all began for me after years of watching others fly greasers at a local parks and slopers at Otford.

So post up a pic of when you started (if they had cameras back then). A pic of your first plane preferably with you in it.

I built this Drifter II with my old man (he built, I watched) when I was 10 back in 1984.

I know I shoudln't post this, but I just stumbled across this photo recently. It's me with my Albatross kit build in 1987 or 88. Flew the hell out of it with my JR Beat 2 radio.

From the mid 70s.

Then a 35 year hiatus.

Boy I wish we had all of today's cool stuff back then, might have stuck around.

The funny part about all of this is that the Drifter II is still bigger than Narcas

At 12 years old. It didn't last long as the mixture screw kept vibrating loose so I took it back to toys'r'us and got $99 worth of basketball cards!!! Lol

Yeah, coxes do that, along with spit glow heads, undo the cylinder sleeve and just generally try to destroy themselves every second they run.

Basketball cards eh?

Here's one of me and my Aeroflyte Hustler , before the aileron wing !!

I later tried to thread it through the RH tree in the background, that's when the aileron wing became necessary ....

Great photo's of you guys starting up - some quite a few years ago now.

My foray into RC wasn't all that glorious - an ST Cessna a couple of years ago. Strangely enough, I've still got it and it flys great. But I put that thing through hell.

Had no idea what to do (not much improvement there since, I'm affraid )

I took it out the the 'local' when no-one was there - to save embarrassment in front of others. It took off - and for some stupid reason, I kept trying to use the rudder to get the nose pointing in the right direction. And promptly crashed. Glue, TLC...fixing...fixing..

Up again - same thing. *tinkle tinkle*

Fixing...fixing... taking off... crashing.. (repeat a dozen times).

Got sick of that one and tried smaller foamies.

Same thing - launch, crash, fix.

Gave up on that for over a year. Then found some small co-ax and FP heli's. Finally got some flying time there, albeit with the inevitable fly, crash, fix routine continuing.

Then another shot at fixed wings. This time a SAPAC Phoenix. Two wing types, and high and low wing slots. Fly. Crash. Fix.

Then someone suggested they fly it, trim it...and give me some words of advice and guidance.

Oh... ! - keep the wings level on take off? What a novel idea.

The penny finally dropped and I started getting the hang of it.

Pity I don't have any pics to share.

They'd mostly be of mangled planes anyways

Not a lot has changed...

Yeah, still got a few rookie cards that hopefully go up in price over the years, and I've got some of the last ever printed Jordan cards.

Very similar here, no simulators, no instructors I went through about 6 planes before the guys at the hobby shop demanded I build it, then bring it in for inspection before I flew it, low and behold the elevator and ailerons were reversed! Hey, I thought the Tx stick up was up and down was down and so forth. Finally I got the plane ( what now I recall was a pylon racer!!) and with no idea about centre of gravity I had alot more crashes and repairs! I eventually got there and can fly quite well now when I'm not flying someone else's plane ay Narcas ???
