Wall mount for a Footy

I like to display my models, and sailboats are particularly difficult because they are so tall. A few years ago I made a wall mount for my Dumas Huson 24 out of Red Oak and it's happily hanging in the stairway.

For the back board, I went through my scrap wood and found several 10" long pieces of Mahogony and a scrap board of Spanish Cedar. I ripped the Mahogony down to 1/4" x 2" strips and the Cedar into 1/8" thick strips. The wood is all glued together onto a piece of scrap masonite board.

After the glue dried overnight, the back board is trimmed and sanded with 60 grit, then 220 until everything is nice and smooth. The edge is given a small radius and a slot is cut into the back for a hanger to fit.

Now, several blocks of mahogony are glued together for the fork that will hold the boat at the keel. Once the glue cures, the design is carefully laid out to fit the keel. The center circle is slightly larger than the width of the keel and the narrow front slot prevents it from slipping out unless the model is turned sideways.

The curvature of the hull is laid out and the fork is cut again. After cutting, files and heavy sandpaper are used to finish the shape.

The finish is one thinned coat of Petit varnish, and 4 coats of lacquer, sanded between each coat.

This was an easy weekend project and I hope it inspires others here to make similar wall displays!

What a great idea - and very well done. I wonder how my wife would react if I ran this by her . . . hmmm.

Dave,
What a beautiful hull - J no doubt. I have a space on a prominent wall and no problem from my spouse. I could set up a web cam and you could check on it at will. Let me know.

R Baker, thanks, it is a Vanguard J (Whirlwind). I had three, now I'm down to two. Near Milwaukee? We could talk. My friend who got the other may swap the black/black for the orange/gray if he ever makes up his mind.

Imagine how impressive a Newport 12 or J boat would look hanging on your wall!

It would not be difficult to make a hanging base for a large boat, A N12 hull weighs about 15 pounds which is well within the limit of a pair of drywall toggle bolts and a pair of heavy D-ring frame hangers.

If you make the back board so that the hangers are at or near the center of gravity of the hull, there will be very little shear stress on the wall and the model will stay forever.
