Portable wearable FPV backpack kit

Hi,

I did something that i wanted to do for a long time, to be able to move when i fly FPV.
I built a fiberglass box that contains 2 Rx and the Oracle Diversity. All goes in my backpack. The recorder, the 4000mAh, and the goggles' wires goes inside the small pouch on my leg.
That specific flight was crappy(Used old Zagi with VERY noisy ESC) Now with the my 'sharky' Multiplex Merlin its all smooth
Portable wearable FPV backpack (4 min 22 sec)

That is fantastic! Do you have a diagram of how it's all put together? How long can you fly with that setup? You might consider building custom kits for people. I'd imagine that you could do very well with a slick system like that.

Hi MDreamer,

Thanks for the idea.

I'm tired of lugging around 2 suitcases and a tripod. So this is my plan.
I was thinking of extending the RX antenna with a coax so that I do not need to mount the bulky RX high up on a stick.

Of course I must be careful not to look like a suicide bomber.
A nerdish looking backpack would be better.

Here's a link to a backpack from the Aerial Photography forum.

Hogster is or was (I haven't followed the AP forum for a while) a very successful photographer flying his gear in heli's.

I saved this, planning to make something similar one day. I still haven't gotten around to it, but I probably will make my own version. Not exactly like this, but a hunk of plywood with shelves and tie downs for the gear. I did get as far as buying some shoulder straps, but my gear is scattered between my house and my flying buddy's and I have not flown either video or FPV for a while.

I'm working on a quarter scale glider that I hope to fly some FPV aerotow with.

Pete

Thanks for that link.
A car battery, oh my that backpack looks too heavy.

I was thinking something lightweight, stylish and comfortable to carry around unhindered by cables. I hate cables.

Here are a few videos of my set up.
Back Pack Ground Station with Joy Stick Controller Attachment (0 min 48 sec)

First FPV Flight with a Joy Stick Controller April 11th 2010 (7 min 37 sec)

I use a Tactical Vest I got from an Army Navy store and 1/2 inch PVC pipes for the frame. It has 2 recievers, an 8dbi patch, an omni antenna, an Oracle Diversity controller, a 5000MAh battery and draws about 700MAh. The belly table with the Joy Stick can be attached or used separately, believe it or not it is very comfortable.

Is it not difficult/disorienting to fly with goggles standing up? I havent tried it myself, but I would think it would make me fall down...

Nice one Tarro! I really liked it.
I also have Tactical Vest from my Army time but for now i am good with what I've got.
I am attaching my diagram for SquireM. The point of the GDT is that i can connect it to my Ground Station on the ground, mount it on my SUV and pull the cable into the inside of the SUV trough the sun-roof and use it in the "Mobile version" when i don't want to carry all the stuff with me - its all depend in what platform i am flying..

Current consumption without the DVR and goggles 620mAh (Just for the 2 RXs the the Oracle)
Current consumption with the DVR and without goggles 1020mAh (I haven't connected the goggles yet)

That`S really cool!!
I love to be mobile.
I use a Hardcase Laptop Backpack for my gear.
Here is my solution :
Mobile FPV Ground Station (1 min 47 sec)

Cheers Chris

Hmm, very innovative guys!

We can make it even smaller.
I'm thinking an arm band with an antenna sticking out.

Do you get losses extending the antenna with coax?
Which antenna mounting is most effective for you?
Do you find it necessary to reach behind the backpack and adjust something but unable to do so?

I always stand up for flying FPV, even with my aerobatic plane. But my goggle are not immersive, I use tint plastic around the goggle to let me see outside. if you are in total immersion meaning you don`t see outside, it take more time to be use to stand up, but it is possible.

I could not find suitable arm band.

I got an idea. Why not modify a roller blade knee guard? It is cheaply found and has straps to tighten around your limbs.
Add velco straps for all the stuff.
The plastic guard can be removed.
