Idea
EASY GEAR, steerable, removable, interchangeable landing gear, ... video ...

Some times when the conditions are really nice, it is fun to have landing gear and do touch and go's. Some times you don't want the weight and drag of the gear. Now you can have it both ways with the "Easy Gear".

I've had this idea for some time but I just never had time to get to it. It was a perfect fit for the X-Raycer, but after i built the first prototype I realized that making the gear removable also allowed it to be interchangeable with other planes.

I tested the same Easy Gear on 4 different planes this evening with great results. I was running out of day light (sorry about the lighting) so the video was shot in a hurry, no pre-testing on the various aircraft, I just mounted the gear and took off. Better video will follow before too long.

The gear was designed not to effect the crafts cg so I wasn't too worried about the flying.

The Easy Gear was also designed with commonly available materials and bits and very little fabrication needed.

If there is interest, free plans will be posted compliments of mach1rc.com.

Awesome!

When the weather is perfect for flying (sunny and calm), I never seem to have any planes ready to go. Don't you hate that?!

I don't think I've really used LG since my Slowstick or GWS cub. Those were the days .

Right now I'm fixing up my Slowstick (my first plane ever) for AP. It's bringing back some good memories.

Plans and build details

Work in progress:

Here are some details of my build for this landing gear:

The main strut is 3/8" x 3/8" x 12" Bass wood. Painted black. Bought it at Michaels' crafts.
5 gram servo
The aluminum is 1/16" x 3/4" available from many hardware stores
The nose gear assembly is Dubro part # 375 . You'll also need a 4-40 bolt and an extra 1/16" locking collar and and adjustable aileron link, Dubros #557, and a clevis and thread 2-56 control rod. to complete the steering arm.

1" front wheel and 1 1/2" rear wheels
1/16" plywood for the front and rear velcro decks

I'm surprised you used 1/16th for the landing gear. I would have thought you would use something thicker. What do you think the maximum weight the gear will support?

My Easy Gear weighs 60 grams.

I'm not sure how much weight it can support or what the weakest point is yet.

The heaviest plane I have tested so far is the Stryker at about 500 grams not including the landing gear.

A Stryker with a LG? Now that's COOL! The pushrod wire looks to be fairly short, I guess that's why he can get away with the thin stuff.

That reminds me, I need to take a plane up with a keychain cam over the site where I lost my Stryker, maybe I can find it. UselessGeek said he found a plane that way, maybe I'll be as lucky as him.
