Wing Building

Once all the parts were cut it took a few hours to fit the ribs onto the main spar. Once that was done and the joiner tubes were made and fit, the root to fuselage joint has a 1" alum. tube on the front side and 3/4" on the rear, it only takes about 5 minutes to assemble the wing to the level of completion shown. Using the box spar and interlocking crutch the whole thing can be fit together without glue. The only thing left to add is the 1/64" ply L.E. sheet and pre formed Poplar L.E. along with the simple rectangular aft spar caps. The T.E. is just a 1" wide strip Top/Bottom of 1/32" ply. Since I was duplicating all of these same steps for the right side as I was making the left, that panel should only take a short time to assemble. I hope to be covering this weekend.

White Tubes?

The tubes are guides for the aluminum stub spars. These serve 2 purposes, 1) give me a little peace-of-mind that the main spar is strong enough at the root and 2) just make it easier to attach the inner wing panels to the fuselage. The tubes are made from 4 layers of 24# craft paper saturated with a 2 part Poly-Urethane plastic (http://www.polytek.com/). The outer 2 white tubes serve the same purpose at Rib15 where the outer panel joins the inner. In the images I posted the tubes have not been trimmed flush to the ribs yet. Looking at the structure as built, the box spar is probably more than strong enough to do the job.

Progress

Its been slow, I lost steam when I new I wasn't going to finish in time for the JR
Aerotow. Have been making some progress though, will try to make it to Cumberland, MD in the Fall. It's bigger than my shop can really handle so in order to assemble it I have to take it outside. Building toy airplanes is a lot of work!

And yes...it is work!
I have plenty of projects in "progress" to testify to that!! 8-)
Looking forward to seeing it at Cumberland! Even if you don't finish it you should bring it up just to show it off!
