General question: gas consumption?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how much his DLE (20, 30, 35,55) or comparable gas engine consumes? Like: my DLE xx usually drains a xx oz tank in x minutes, when I do (cruising/3D/, whatever) with my xx lbs plane. I have to do some math on fuel budget 'cause I am going to buy my first gas engine.

Thank you,
Stefan

A general rule of thumb for 2 stroke gas engines is fuel consumption = engine displacement per minute.

Thus, 20cc = about .68 oz; 30cc = about 1.0 oz.

These are fuel consumption at full throttle. Throttle management will extend consumption time considerably.

I fly a Zenoah G20, and using a 12 oz tank is usually good for 2 aerobatic flights of 8 minutes with adequate reserve left. An 8oz tank would be probably a better choice as I would be carrying less "cargo" as excess fuel.

Flying style, state of tune, prop choice all have an effect on results.

Thank you very much, RCFVR,

I found the same rule of thumb in the internet, and it seems to be considered quite a good approximation.

I have a DLE 30 with an 11 ounce tank on a Goldberg Sukhoi. A 10 minute flight will use 1/2 a tank of fuel.

I have a DLE 20 and a 12 ounce tank and I fly 15:00 and the tank is usually around half full. My tank is too big.

Cheaper too ! And a gas 4 stroke can probably reduce consumption by that much again..

I had converted a 4 cycle Stihl String trimmer FS110 engine to use in my Great Planes Stearman. It was not over powered, but was adequate.
My testing was because someone who didn't know, challenged the ability to fly inverted with that engine.
The FS110 uses a two-stroke fuel mix, although it's a four cycle eng.,and there were no problems with lubrication at all.
Model airplane power is becoming diversified,to be sure.
