Question
Oly II Motor Size

I have an Oly II that I purchased hanging from the LHS ceiling and I'm going electric with this one (have an Oly IIS also). I purchased, for no particular reason about a year ago, a Himax HC3528-1000 outrunner with the following specs:

Max Power: 450W
Max RPM: 20,000
Kv: 1000
Operating Current: 14-48A (68A max burst)

Will this work, what size ESC, prop etc.?

IF the Oly II is strong enough, and everything fits, a 50 amp controller and a 11X7 prop using 3 cells will work great- around a 1.5:1 thrust to weight ratio. The motor will be operating at its optimal efficiency, which is nice. All according to eCalc.

Are you sure you don't want to use that motor in something else? It's overkill for an Oly II. Especially if you are not planning ALES competition. My guess is that if you have an efficient prop you can get an "acceptable" climb with as little as 50 watts per lb, although it might take a minute or two to get to something like 200 meters. Part of the appeal of the Oly II is how light it is. I think the original radio gear it was designed for was around 12 oz, and I also suspect you can come up with some modern gear, including the battery, motor, ESC and prop, that would come out to the same weight.

Maybe you should put that big motor in a Paragon?

If I was going to put a motor like that into an Oly II, I think I would prop it to draw 250 to 300 watts, not 450. And I'd use a relatively small battery.

I've got an electric Oly 2 with a motor that pulls just over 250W using a 13 x 6.5. It climbs fine and seems to do best at not much more than 30 degrees. Also, I find that on full power, with the Oly 2 being pushed beyond it's preferred glide speed - it wants to pitch upward much more than my more slippery Odyssey 2.7M - so I have to hold much more down elevator on climb out. Perhaps if you modded to have less decalage than stock and/or tried to optimize the power system to maintain a relatively modest prop pitchspeed (mine calculates out at 39mph for what it's worth), you could go higher than 300W?

The wing structure on the Oly II is subject to flutter at high speeds. The plane will crash.

Thanks for the input so far, I'm just looking for a relatively inexpensive set-up so I can fly something this winter.

Kind of new to electrics, I have a SuperSport 2.35 that I bought from Esprit and it runs and flys great but I don't want to use it in the winter.

Again any additional set-ups for motor/esc/prop and all help is greatly appreciated.

I recently built and electrified an OLY IIS, and used this motor:

Pretty cheap, works well, and importantly, was just the right weight to balance the plane perfectly with the battery centered over the CG under the wing and no extra weight added. I use a 10x6 folder and a 2650 3S battery. It won't go vertical, but it gets up just fine.

One other thing I forgot to mention is that it fits the plane like it was made for it, and the wiring connections at the rear of the motor are a real plus.

This is a link to an album of photos I put up when I was doing the build. If you poke around in there, you'll find quite a few photos of the motor installation:

Motor size

One thing to keep in mind with electric motors is that you do not have to run them anywhere near their full power potential - you can choose any power level that suits you by selecting a smaller or larger prop size (or sometimes fewer LiPo cells, eg 2S vs 3S).
If the motor fits, and you can get a good CG without having to ballast the tail, just prop the motor to give somewhere between 150 to 200W per kg of AUW, and go flying.
Yes, the Oly will flutter if driven too fast - don't drive it too fast.
Cheers,
PeteM

I had good flights on large planes like the Oly II and Kadet Seniorita with the e-flite 480 and a 10x6 prop. Three cells.
eflite 25 with the 10x6 works well also.
