Question
Yardbird II Material list and Build Instructions???

Greetings all.

I recently pickup up the Yardbird II rib set from Mountain Models and I have been looking around for where I saw the latest build thread with all of the updated instructions and a bill of materials. The only one I can really find is this post.

Is this the best list to work off of? I was thinking of starting on this over the winter, but I am trying to stock pile all of the materials now.

Thanks in advance!

I'm always available for questions, but it's been a long time since I built a Yard Bird... I'll do my best.

Thanks Jack!

I was hoping you might chime in here. I probably won't start the built till November but, like I said, want to get everything in place.
I will either stay a new thread for the build or just stay it here which seems more probable.

After that will be the Houston Hawk which will be a full house version. .. or maybe the Genie Hawk.

Uh, Genie Hawk? Thought there was only one of them there birds.....

I love my Yardbird. I love it so much I rebuilt the wing once due to catastrophic launch failure. Now I'm going to rebuild it again after power failure two weeks ago. The tips keep surviving, so the center panel keeps getting rebuilt. LOL

Yeah. I stumbled upon your post with that in it. Instant love affair.

I have been wanting to build a Genie for a while, but don't want to take the learning curve of the composites to seriously yet. I think it is fascinating, but there is just something about building with wood.

I agree completely. But one if these days I'm gonna take the plunge and build the composite Genie wing too. Same fuselage and tail, different wing so different plane.

Genie Hawk launch (5 min 7 sec)

Keep in mind also, I built this wing for e-launch but have been using the winch for now.

Did you have to add any strength to the wing for the addition of ailerons? Or just change the basic structure of the trailing edge?

I added the sub spars for the aileron and flap attachments themselves, but no added strengthening. Again, I was trying to go light on the wing for an ALES setup, but I've ended up winching it for now (very gently).

I'm sure I am going to get some grumbling from this, but I have really been considering a T-Tail for either the YBII or the HH...

Not from me... it's your toy, so shouldn't you enjoy it?

me either, just make it lite enough so you don't get any fuselage boom snap going on.

Let me tell you the one thing that I don't like about flying the Genie Hawk. It's a lot of work. I'll admit to having flown RES style planes for 98% of my sailplane flying career, so I'm conditioned to flying lazy. Sometimes I like flying hands off and just watching it sail. The Genie Hawk? Yeah, not so much.
