Finishing up my RNAF Hellcat

My Molt Models Hellcat had its maiden a couple of weeks ago in its bare, unfinished state and flew really well on the standard set-up (IPS) and a 700 mah Etech. Therefore it has been my goal to get her dressed up as one of the Britsh F6F's and here is my progress.

The airframe was mainly covered with Doculam (that I never used on my Swichback kit) but I did have a few wrinkle problems and resorted to solite in a few areas. The whole plane was cleaned with some vinegar to degrease and then Prymol etch primer was used to give a good base for the paint to stick.

I mad a couple of minor changes along the way.

1. I found a that I snapped a few of the stringers on the lower front edge (my balsa did seem very light and fragile in this area) when making less than perfect belly landings, so I decided to fill som of this area in to add some strength.

2. I wanted the option of flying with or without the landing gear and so I have added some spruce bearers either side of the gear mount points that can take some small screw on plates to secure the gear.

Then a bit of 'Fun' with the cockpit,

I did get a vac formed man with the kit, but I felt he was a little on the large size for this plane so I knocked one up from some foam packing material and masking tape plus spackle (he's not meant to be true scale, just a representation!). He doesn't even register on my scales! The instruments were just printed out and stuck on and a seat was added from scrap balsa.

Thanks mtrflyr, I wasn't too sure a bout the pilot at first either, but the canopy is not very clear so I would have been even more upset if I could'nt see my efforts having spent ages on an exact scale pilot! I think he look fine through the 'frosted' glass! Much better than without one at all.

Got the white invasion stripes sprayed today and I've also done some more painting on the nose, I'll post some more pics later if you like?

Thanks Guys,

So heres a little more progress as mentioned.

The nose ring was painted matt red enamel and also note that the intake fins have been added as these are not in the vac forming. The engine was painted with 'burnt steel' and Imay dry brush a little silver over later.

The white stripes have been sprayed on, again using Tamiya acrylics, one note here is, don't use biro to mark out and then try and overpaint with acrylic (don't ask me how I know!). I had to remove the biro from these areas and re-do in pencil after re-prymol'ing (prymol is also a good acrylic stripper!!! ).

Here's a shot with my 4 year old holding it.

next job is to do the black stripes, not sure wether to be lazy and try brushing them on as I get tired of masking, also some flakes of paint do tend to lift if you're not really careful even though I'm using low-tack stencil masking.
