Boise Slope Flyers

There are a bunch of great slopes in the Boise area. I would like to borrow an idea from many others on RCG and start a thread for Boise area flyers to share sites, coordinate trips, discuss flying, brag about new airplanes and anything else related to local slope flying.

I'll try to consolidate information about local slope sites and information in the following two posts.

Boise Slope Sites

Table Rock [Note: Parking at the top is open from May 1st to Nov 15th]
Almost any wind direction - Nice location for flying but not so great for landing. The edge is all rock. Flyable in numerous wind directions.

Crow Hill [Note: Open May 1st to Nov 15th]
NW Winds - A great hill that is also used by paragliders. Works great in the NW winds most common in Boise. Parking is at the "West Highland Valley Trailhead". It's a bit of a hike up the 500 foot hill but the flying is worth it! This hill looks like it could be DS'able. See post #117 for directions.

Warm Springs Mesa
SE Winds - A South East Slope on the east side of Boise. It is a 400 foot slope that is located on the east side of the Warm Springs Mesa. You park at the end of Stone Ridge Way and walk to the launch site. It is about 200yds to the launch. Decent landing area with some rocks. See post 45 for a map.

Crow Hill is a DS hill .

mperc and I attempted DS'ing on Sunday and pulled off a few decent circuits. Neither of us have DS'ed before so It's going to require a bit more practice and heavier airplanes to see how good it really is...

Windfinder is showing very light breezes for today. I haven't been out to Pickle yet; how does it work in a light breeze? What time are you heading out there?

It works pretty good in light stuff if you have some floaters. I'm waiting for a fellow flyer from Twin Falls so if we miss the morning or if it's flat we might flat land at hero's park or explore for DS hills locally.

Winds should be 9-12 from the SE today according to Windfinder. Is anyone else going flying and any suggestions for the best site?

Greetings gents,

I'm ALWAYS looking for a spot to slope with good LZs for my scale crunchies.
How's you area?

Hi LP,

Check out the link for Bluefork's list in post #3. He has pictures of some of the sites so you can see what they look like.

In general, the LZs vary so you would need to choose a site you feel comfortable with. I've flown 100" crunchies at a couple of places but my favorite so far is Crow Hill. Landing on top is possible with big airplanes, especially if you have glide path control but one local flyer lands his airplanes at the bottom of the hill where it is pretty flat.

Nice! Subscribed...

I fly mostly at the crow hill when wind is NW and off the sandy bluff above nursery side of warm springs Mesa when wind is SE.

Some flying also at the radio tower area near pickles butte in Nampa and used to go to the ridge near Melba popular with the parasailers.

You guys mentioned DSing. Is this off the back side at crow's?

Cool stuff, cheers, Jim
