Question
Old-School hand launch sailplanes... which ones are still in production?

I'm sure most of you have seen the video below. What kits are available out there for a similar plane? ~1.5 meter polyhedral, 2 channel, balsa built up construction, suitable for javelin launch or light high start? So far the Isthmus Models Zephyr II looks to be the closest, but am I missing any other kits that are still in production?
Thanks all... Matthew

Check Skybench Aerotech, they have a 1.5 m wooden hand launch plane called "lil Bird". Check availability first, their website indicates they're not accepting new orders until they get caught up with current orders.

Also wrightbrothersrc sells a plane called a Gambler which can be javelin launched. The beauty of this design is that once you injure your shoulder from the overhand launches you can grab it by the wingtip and perform a proper discus launch using half the effort and get twice the launch height. Unfortunately their site is also showing that it's temporarily out of stock.

Check out this site: http://www.clm-pro.com/

I've got one (still not built - family issues have been eating me alive this year). The build process is unique, and fit-and-finish appear superb.

Not still in production but I have NIB Paraphrase kit from Scott Whitney.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...errerid=221707

I still have not even opened the box since I got it. I think he included some other plans of some of his new stuff along with the paraphrase kit but I can't remember what it was.

The Paraphrase always did have a killer reputation for being able to get out on gopher belches.

If there is any interest I can put it out on the 4sale forum.

Thanks guys... some stuff to look into. The shoulder issue that WBE mentioned is a consideration, I've looked at the Gambler of course but was wondering if something like the Zephyr with its longer wingspan would out-thermal it if launched to similar (or higher) altitude off a high start?

A mini hi start like the Great Planes Hi-Start Fling HLG

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHMZ3&P=7

will give a pretty gentle launch to an old style HLG without the shoulder issue.

I would recommend adding some line and a chute to what they are offering.

Sometimes you can get a Bridi Tercel or Flipper on E-bay.
or plans...Scratch building one of these is really pretty easy. Small electtric outrunner would also work great.

Matthew, and the gentleman in the video, have inspired me to repair my 8-year-old Gambler and take it out to see if it's even possible to thermal out on an overhand throw. I had my doubts.

Second throw, got maybe 25 feet (it slipped during launch, remember this thing is for discus), stumble into lift and specked out for a 15 minute flight...

I know the old pros are thinking " well duh" but I was amazed.

Cool! I just ordered a Gambler this afternoon... looking forward to building it light to be able to pull of similar feats of thermaling. How much does yours weigh?

When it was new (2007) it weighed 155 grams. It's been broken a few times so its probably gained a few grams. It's like throwing a piece of cotton into the air! I think building something in the 10-12 oz. range (like they did back in the 80's) might actually be more comfortable for an overhand throw.

I recently acquired a 1995 Maple Leaf: 9 oz or so of kevlar fun. Two channels and a big piece of carbon for a throwing "peg". I bought for light sloping, but have yet take it out to the local cliff.

Instead, we all take turns heaving the thing, exactly as the designer intended. I could sell tickets! One fine day, three of us in a row were able to climb out from a whopping 25 feet or so.

Great fun!

Yours, Greg

Adding to the Zephyr II currently in production I will be adding Scott Whitney's Paraphrase kit shortly. Also I will be kitting Scott's Deception. One more HLG wood kit I am working on the Felipe Vadillo's Dynamo

Fantastic Mark, was just looking at Felipe's video the other day. The Dynamo is a good looking 1.5m wood glider, when Felipe uses it to work that low-level bubble for a 1:40 it makes the video a great marketing tool. When I watch the vid I want to buy/build/fly it!

I'll second that! Be sure to keep us posted when kits are in production... looks like a beautiful little plane.
