yeah, i think a proper radio and receiver would be good. so what type of boat are you wanting to make, a speed boat or a scale boat?
if your wanting a faster boat, gears wont be needed, direct drive gets the rpms to the prop

something like this would give you enough gear for a few boats: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1615113
and if you buy a spektrum compatible micro receiver like this: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Receiver_.html than you could use those extra servos on another 1 or 2 boats. the only thing you will need to get those working is one of the cheap rtf transmitters, or a dx5e if you cant find one.
this motor: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...r_11500kv.html with this esc http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ontroller.html or even a 2s controller if you want a hotter setup.
also you will need some props, there are some decent ones available from shapeways: http://www.shapeways.com/model/37410...s-16-pack.html
