New Product
X3

Hey guys,

I hadn't seen anyone posting pics of the new X3. The X and X2 threads have gotten so long, I can't seem to find anything. Anyway, I just got mine. This one is a 4.0... or a 3.942 (the tips lost an inch per side)

Improvements over the X2:
  • 8 degree joiners
  • newly shaped tips - flat, ailerons all the way out
  • new stab and fin shape
  • looks cool

After weighing all my components, I expect mine will finish out around 58 ounces. That'll work.... I'll probably fly it this weekend.

OK, pics are too small. I'll have to resubmit, unfortunately, they're on my phone. Give me a few

Hi Daryl,

I was wondering if you would post your planned equipment for the build out?

I have been looking forward to this thread as it will be all I have to feed my enthusiasm as I wait for mine to show up in August.

Is the airfoil still the same as X2?

S-1-11B,

The plan is:

Pitch: Futaba BLS173 - Weight - 28g, Torque - 94.5 oz/in at 6.6 v, Speed - 0.11 at 6.6 v
Rudder: Undecided
Flaps: MKS HBL6625 mini- Weight 27 g, Torque - 78 oz/in at 7.4 v, Speed - .11 @ 7.4 v
Ail: MKS 6100HV - Weight 10 g, Torque - 42 oz/in at 7.4 v, Speed - 0.11 @ 7.4 v

Bob sent me some frames for the flap and aileron servos. I very rarely break servos, as such, I rarely use frames, but since Bob (and Thomas) went to all the trouble of sending them..... Actually, I have no experience with the MKS servos, so frames aren't a bad idea. This is going to be my all around go to model, so overkill on the servos and installation of frames is a very good thing for this one.

I've been running Life packs (1450's), but I don't think this model will take the nose weight, so I may need to run 850's.

I start building this morning. Expect to see this at the Nats next week.

Hi,

That is a good guess. I have a 1500 mAh Life and receiver in most rearward position (piled in front of the servo tray) in my X3, and to get CG to 135 mm I still had to put 4 g weight to tail.

I think smaller servos are ok as these latest Xplorers have separate elevators. I have just started to use MKS DS 92A+ servo in elevator. No real experience yet but it feels really good and as a bonus, a little less weight in nose helps with CG.

For some time Futaba 3156 has been my std servo in rudder. No problems to report. Actually any of the metal geared 10g servos would be ok. I install rudder servo a little to one side so that short servo arm does not interfere with ballast.

Hi Tuomo,

Yes, I thought about saving some weight on the elevator servo, but I didn't really have an appropriate one. I have experience with the BLS173 and I LOVE it. I also run a longer arm than optimal to allow for quicker and more authoritative nose over, so overkill for torque and resolution in my case isn't a bad thing. (Kapow mix)

I did install the MKS 6100 for the rudder. Possibly flying it this afternoon if all goes smoothly. (Sure, like that'll happen! )

Hi all,

I was also encouraged by good experiences with smaller servos (mainly 3156) and decided go further in my X3. MKS6100 in elevator, rudder and ailerons, and full IDS in wing. JR181 in flaps.
So far no problems, allthough my model is a quite lightweight (1545 g, 3,76m wing) and not to be used in moderate or heavy conditions (...other models for those).

Aaro,

Very pretty and functional install. Unfortunately, that wouldn't create enough pitch throw for me. Yes, I run a ludicrous amount. My servo arm is probably 30% longer.

Thanks for sharing the pics.
