Build Log
Slice-n-Dice

After flying the rekit for awhile I've grown to really like this airfoil. Quite good floaty performance coupled with some speed, even inverted.

But the design could use some tweaking. Although there seems to be plenty of elevon, it rolls quite slowly and the rudder could use some more umph as well, so I'll dig into the airframe once again and tweak things to suit my current flying skills. The airfoil is probably 12% thick, which is just fine by me. Vertical dives yield a lot of noise and maybe 60mph. Perfect for this lightly built wing.

On the building board are bigger elevons and a stretched out tail.

Ancient Chinese wisdom: "Better is enemy of sufficient."

Looks like it is a great flyer from here. I used to fly the A-4 and the way it handles in that video reminds me of it. Very lively.

A-4 Skyhawk?.........funny, most hikers out there say that they first thought it was a hawk.

That's the one - flew the A and B models - old ones - long time ago. Very lively aircraft.

Just finishing up the rekit. The elevons have been widen out to a sharp TE with Rhinohide skins and taped hinges added. Hopefully these changes reduce some of the drag and noise of the old wing. The same tail has been pushed back to the sub spar position.

With any luck, some air time tomorrow.

This wing is a lot quieter now and maybe a little faster too. The sharp TE really makes a difference at speed. Added 3oz. to the nose to get it to balance at 4% static margin. I was worried that the wider elevons would over control but it flys fast and smooth. Nice slope ship.

Were you using the rudder function?

Did you notice a difference from moving the fin and rudder back a bit?

Yes I'm flying with rudder now. Not mixed into aileron, just manual. So rudder only turns are possible and are probably a good choice for easy thermal turns. I tilted the rudder hinge line in hopes of getting some up elevator coupled with rudder input but it's not enough and some up elevator is needed to carve a turn.

The rudder linkage has been stiffened up in addition to more aft placement so the rudder is now very effective. Big difference. I think I'll put it on expo just to give me a fighting chance to feed in just a little.

A few seconds of rudder only turns.

Slopin in the UK

or at least as close as I'll ever get..........Couldn't help but think that the Brits wouldn't have been phased by today's fog. Finally tried using expo on the elevator. Much better.

I like this wing Kent. Looks like you are enjoying even in the light lift.

Kent - you are going to have a hard time improving on that aircraft when you build your next design.

The winds should die down in a month or two and I'll have a go at hand launching into a thermal. The nice green grass is gone for the season and the tall dry grass should really cook up some nice thermals. Am enjoying trying to learn to use the rudder on this short coupled ship.

Nothing but fog around here lately, so I'm out on the ocean side of the mountain trying to find some sky. Along with the open sky, you get rocks..........what's the worst that could happen....
