Description:

Hey all you 3D junkies out there. I have something thats definitely worth checking out. Its the brand new Edge 540 Mini. The scheme and lines of this thing really stand out. It honestly has to be one of my favourite looking profiles to date. The race checker scheme, the winglets, and the bright colour choice's of yellow or red really make this one pop. But not only does the New Edge Mini look good, its also a great flyer. It would be a great addition to anyone's fleet. Be it the beginner just learning to 3D or the 3D huckn veteran.

Now the Big Decision ... What colour?. Good thing I was fortunate enough to receive one of each as deciding between the two would of been tough. So in my case I think I will just end up picking the colour that better suits the flying style of that day. Say mellow yellow for those low and slow harrier and torque rolling days. And Fire Red for those high speed, high energy knife edge flights. Ok its time to get started !

Building the Edge 540 Mini is pretty straight forward as the Instructions are very detailed and well laid out. I ended up following them to the tee and was able to complete both builds in a couple of days. Double the work though but twice the fun!. Here are just a few pics I took through out the process to give you an idea of what you'll be getting into.

Once the building portion was completed it was time to set them up and take them outside. I started with the radio and set them up with 3 different flight modes. This gives 3 different animals to play with. A mild mannered setting for slow rolling circles and precision flying. My go to medium 3D rate which i tend to do most of my flying with. And then last but not least the crank things up and surprise yourself 3D rate.
After setting up the radio the next thing was to tackle the C.G.. I went with the suggested 150mm back from the motor mount which I found gave a good all around neutral feel. Surprise, surprise, they had already figured out the best C.G. location, no thinking required ;-).
NOW FINALLY! ......the only thing left to do was to charge up some batteries and see what this thing could do :-).
Flight Report Time:

First off I would like to comment on how stable this thing is in high alpha for its size. I found it to be rock solid in both upright and inverted harrier's with little to none wing rock. This feature would definitely appeal to anyone just learning to harrier . Hovering I found to be docile and predictable with minimal correction changes needed to keep it there. Knife edge flight needed zero coupling once the C.G. Had been set up properly. Rollers, snaps, snap turns, and walls were very typical of a light foamy with no surprises.
I must say I enjoyed flying the Edge 540 a lot and shows with the big grin I had after every flight.

When you can fly a plane on the maiden and second flight and do whatever you want, you know you've got your hands on one of Twisted Hobby's finest new products. Really easy to fly and yet very capable of all the high energy stuff. This plane will be at Nall and everywhere else we go this year. Love it!

Had my MIni Edge 540 out in the park last night, not ideal conditions, was kinda cold and breezy, but the little Edge handled it all just fine. CG from the manual was spot on.

Setup of the radio was super simple... 100% on all the ATVs with the stock arms and outer hole locations. Initial setting for expo are 60% on the ailerons and 50% for both the rudder and elevator... may tweak that a little in the next couple flights. On the 250mAh sized 2s packs I was getting a solid 3-1/2 minutes of hard throttle, with some capacity to spare.

This plane will be at home just about anywhere... should make a good Gym Flier, Backyard Basher or Park Performer. It is really nice that it is so small, easy to transport, and with a pocket full of batteries you can have a fun filled afternoon at your favorite flying venue.

Very nice flying! Is there a comparison between the other mini's from TH? Is this slower faster or what? Very Very Nice. Ron

Slower or faster... depends on the stick on the left

Ron, same power system and nearly same exact size planes... The Edge is a better, more stable plane for those starting into 3D flying. The classic clean straight leading edge adds to it's stability in the air. It's going to be a little easier to fly than other 24" planes. That was the intent anyway. A little less roll rate than the MXS-C Mini and a little less snappy but plenty of authority to do all your 3D maneuvers (like waterfalls, knife edge loops, rolling maneuvers etc...).

Here's a little video showing a peek at how slow and fast it is.

Well behaved plane and a lot of fun. I know... they're all fun!

Who says you can't fly planes in the woods..
