Creating six cubic projection faces from your 360x180 panarama for Phoenix Builder

I have found a FREE (PC or Mac) application that can generate (with a little additional work later on your part) the six cubic projection faces that you will need to create from your original 360x180 panarama, to create a flying site in Phoenix Builder (and other apps as well, I imagine).

It is called g.projector. It was developed by NASA, no less! Get it here...

http://www.giss.nasa.gov/tools/gprojector/

By the way, there is no installer for this app. Just unzip everything into a folder and run it.
Here is how to use it to create those six square files from your 360x180 pan. Much of the info below is
according to the author of the application.

1 - import your 360x180 map.

2 - click OK (you'll see)

3 - select "gnomonic" from the list at the bottom of the window (NOT "gnomonic cubic projection")

4 - see this screen grab for the initial settings.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...c_settings.png
It's important that the "graticule" and both "overlays" are set to "NONE". Experiment with them to see why. The .radius must be 45.

5 - from the file menu, choose "save map as"

6 - give the file a name like "part 1". You will be creating 6 files; labelling the files like this is important to keep
them organized.

7 - in the dialog that opens, set the HEIGHT to 2000 (never mind the width) and hit OKAY to save the file.

8 - Now you will be repeating steps 5 thru 7, five more times to create all the faces. You will need to change the
view for each image, as follows:

file 1: Lon 0 E, Lat 0 N (you already did this one)
file 2: Lon 90 E, Lat 0 N
file 3: Lon -180 E, Lat 0 N
file 4: Lon -90 E, Lat 0 N
file 5: Lon 0 E Lat 90 N
file 6: Lon 0 E, Lat -90 N

9 - Now you will have six files. They need to be cropped. The dimensions of the images are 4010 x 2010 pixels.
This includes an "extra" area of image on the left and right, and a thin white border all around. You need the
2000 x 2000 pixels in the center. This is easily done in Photoshop, or hopefully in what image-editing app you
have. In photoshop, just select "canvas size", set to 2000 x 2000 pixels and hit OK. Say YES when it warns you
that you are trimming your image. Resave the files as the same names, or at least maintain the number in the
filenames.

That's it. Now you have the six files that you need to insert into Phoenix Builder, in numerical order. Insert file 1
first, 2 second, etc. like so...

HAVE FUN!

There is another way of converting spherical panoramas to cubefaces:

Download the trial version of PTGUi.

http://www.ptgui.com/download.html

Install and open.

Then go to "Tools"-Menu and follow these instructions:

It's very quick and easy.

Hi Harald,

Thank you, I am aware of PTGUI. At this point I am not prepared to invest $89 for it. Besides, I figure that the other app was paid for with my tax dollars, so I ought to make use of it!

Best,
Steve

Hi Steve,

as far as I know, this function creates no ptgui-logos in the cubeface-output even by running the trial-version.

Can you please try this out?

Here is my workflow:

Harald,

THANK YOU for posting your workflow for using this software. It will help me and a lot of others, no doubt. I will give it a try shortly...

Best,
Steve

Another very useful method with Salado-Converter:

http://www.pano.szenerien.de/Salado-...Converter.html

https://github.com/mstandio/SaladoConverter/downloads

I just found another very easy way - absolutely free:

1. Install Hugin:

http://hugin.sourceforge.net/download/

2. Download this script with Firefox (Chrome refuses the download):

http://www.panorama-community.net/wb...deb7fb46d13b55

or

http://www.pano.szenerien.de/Equi_to...2cubefaces.zip

3. From the Hugin-folder copy and paste the dll-files and the nona.exe into a new folder on your desktop.

4. Unpack the equi2cubefaces.zip into the new folder on your desktop.

5. Drag and drop the nona.exe onto the script-file.

6. Copy and paste your spherical panorama(s) into the folder.

7. Drag and drop the image(s) on the vbs-script and wait until the tiff-cubefaces are created.
