Charger RC Giant Fuzion

I saw a video of one of these things flying and had to get one.
I ordered it from http://www.chargerrc.com
and received it in about one week via USPS.

The box had the usual USPS crunches on the side but the foam
pieces inside were in perfect shape.

Basically you get virtually everything you need to build the plane
except for the adhesives. Of course you will need some hefty servos
and a large enough motor and ESC to pull eleven pounds around. Plus
the appropriate batteries.

I already had everything else that I needed laying around doing nothing
so I was all set.

I won't give a detailed build thread because it comes with excellent instruction
and builds like almost any other foamie, except bigger.

All the fuse needed was to glue two pieces together for each part, sand down the
rough foam and apply the decals. It took about four hours to get to this point.

This gives you a better idea of the size of this thing.
The elevator of the giant fuzion is setting in front of my 36" WS Yak.

The entire plane is one inch thick styrene foam.
It appears to have been wire cut to thickness so it needs
quite a bit of sanding to get rid of the rough surface.
Although that has not been my favorite part of this build, it went pretty
quickly using a long sanding block.
I sanded it outside because foam dust is extremely messy,
then blew it off with an electric leaf blower.

Everything in the kit was laser cut and is very accurate. The allignment of holes in the plywood parts with the foam is perfect.
This is a well designed, and fabricated kit.

So far I have used 30 minute epoxy, clear gorilla glue and five minute epoxy
in the assembly.

Another one and half hours and the wings are sanded,
the provided spar has been glued in with 30 minute epoxy,
and the decals are on.

Really, for a plane this large it is going together pretty quickly.

I have always hated hinging the movable surfaces on all my other builds.
On this one I have been kind of looking forward to it.

Charger RC provided with the kit a nifty little tool for centering and cutting the hinge holes for the provided hinge pins. I expect it to make short work of this job.
It straddles the foam and you just twist the brass tube in until it touches the silicon grip and you are finished. Right to the proper depth.
Push the foam plug out of the brass piece and go to the next hole.

The ailerons are installed and hinged on the wings.
Their hinging tool did a good job, but it is still slow tedious
work in my mind.
Just waiting for the 30 minute epoxy to cure after each step
takes quite a bit of time. Of course I went ahead and did some other
things while waiting.

I had to stop working on the fuzion for a couple days,
a nasty thing called work reared it's ugly head and took precedence
over my playing. I am going to get back to the giant Fuzion now but first
I took literally two hours and built Charger RC's small Fuzion.

I bought it because I thought it would be cute to fly it along side the giant one.
I was surprise at how quickly it went together. I had it ready to fly in just two hours from opening the box.

Of course I am going to try a few of their time saving methods that I have never used before. Like taping the motor on to the plane using their CNC motor mount.
I wil see how well that works.

It is a neat looking little plane for the time and money invested.
Truly an ARF if like me you already have some small motors and gear laying around.

Just in case anyone is interested in building the Giant Fuzion,
but are afraid that they do not have the space to build such a large plane.

I have completely built this one on my little 36" X 24" building board.

All of the sub assemblies are finished and ready for the fun part.
I have sanded the foam, put the decals on, hinged the ailerons and elevator,
and have the hinge pins installed in the vertical stab ready for the rudder.

I have also glued all the plywood parts on that were supplied except for the motor mount and battery trays.

Now comes the fun part, putting all the pieces together. It will start to look more like a real plane very quickly.

Glued the fuse top to the horizontal fuse with no problems.
You just have to make sure that you mix enough 30 minute epoxy to finish the job after you start. There is not enough time to mix more after you start smearing it on.

Now it is starting to look like a BIG foamie.

Don't look at the clutter in my shop. I clean up after every three builds or so.

Glued the bottom fuse on, attached the landing gear, and
finished glueing the rudder on.

WOW! Pictures don't do this justice. I can't believe how big it
is when I stand beside it on its landing gear.

No way this is going to fit in the trunk of the car.

Fortunately, I have a pick up truck.

It is getting closer now.
The motor mount is glued in with my Eflite Power 160 installed.
The servos are all in. All I need to do now is hook up the ESC and RX, program the radio and position the batteries for proper CG.

I am getting anxious to fly her.

Going to a wedding tomorrow so I probably won't get to work on it much this weekend.
Bummer.
