Question
What are the materials used in this mold?

Hi everybody,

sometimes I encounter people building molds like the one in the picture attached.

What materials are used in this mold techinique? Looks like plaster coated with some kind of resin.

Best Regards

If you observe, the coat is too thick... Looks like it was applied before plaster... But if resin was applied before, plaster would not bound to resin...

There are hydrophobic resins available specifically for this application. They're called plastic faced plaster (PFP) molds. Adtech's ES-221 surface coat epoxy is one.

Thanks everybody! I was looking for something cheaper and faster. Probably I will go with a fiberglass mold.

What brand surfacing coat is that Kevin if you don't mind?
Also, have you had any experience re-finishing & buff/polishing that particular resin?

Kevin, once you have your first layer of the hi temp resin down, what do you use to continue? I mean do you transition to a different resin? If so what type? Glass, coremat, carbon roving etc.?

Thanks,

Jim W.
