VQ WARBIRDS P-40 A.V.G. Flying Tiger Assembly!!

OK.... SO I am on a mission to assemble a VQ AVG "FLYING TIGER" P-40 ASAP!! AND I Need to get her put together by only working on her after work and in my "spare time"... Goal is to have it flight ready in 4 weeks of easy evening time assembly... (FEB. 16th, 2007)
HERE ARE THE Specifications:
Wingspan : 63"
Fuse Length : 51"
Wing Area: 676 sq in
Wing Loading: ~25 - 33 oz/sq ft
Weight: ~7.5 - 9.0lbs
Engine req : .60 - .65 (2 stroke), .70 - .90 (4 stroke)
Radio req : 5 channels min. (VQ P-40 INCLUDES dual split flaps and requires 90 deg. rotating retracts)

For landing gear I opted for the CJM VQ P-40 Retracts (they are factory set/cut to fit the VQ P-40)
Plan on powering it with an RCV91-CD 4 stroke and a 3-Blade Graupner Prop topped with a VQ Aluminum Spinner! So lets get started...

Here is the box

Here is what it looks like with the lid removed... Everything is tightly and neatly packed....

The cool things about the VQ P-40 are the AIRFOIL SHAPED TAILFEATHERS... No flat balsa here!!!

COOL PRE-Fabricated SPLIT FLAPS... (they use 1 servo per flap and 1 servo per aileron), included Fiberglass Cowling that is large enough to swallow an RCV91-CD 4stroke with Room to spare....INCLUDED Pre-Painted PILOT FIGURE .... ALso included are pre-installed wing fillets, panel lines, weathering, beefy firewall, and 2 Different decals for the ferocious P-40 SHARKMOUTH !!!!! ... IT EVEN HAS ROUND GEAR POD COVERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Nemesis,
I just picked up mine today also in Australia.
Sea Green version. I love it already!!

Tossing up between a Saito 100 or a YS 110. Hmm decisions!
I just love RichardL's P-40. That YS sounds soooo sweet!

STARTING OFF THE 1st night of the WEEKEND BY working on the wing panels separately...

The VQ FACTORY pre-installed the aileron and flap servo covers, glued in the servo mounting blocks, and pre-drilled and installed the covers with metric screws!! What a thoughtful touch..heheheehe.. I guess I am done for the night... OK ..maybe not... Onward thru the fog!!!!

I choose HiTec Servos with 60 oz of torque for the ailerons and 50oz of torque HiTecs for the flaps ( each flap and each aileron gets its own servo... so the torque is MORE THAN ADEQUATE...
I took my time mounting the servos to all 4 servo plates/covers while sipping on some weekend beverages of choice and spending quality time communicating with my wife with lots of good phrases such as "YES HONEY"..."sounds terrific"... and "of course tomorrow is your night"....... I just know she is planning a list of Honey Do's.... and a "chick flick" at the local MOVIE THEATRE that will test my every nerve....I just hope it is a short movie!! Got to get back to the AVG P-40!!!!!!!!!

OK ... back to the P-40...

Tonite I finished mounting the servos and also lined up the control horns .... I attached the included wire pushrods to the servo arms and then trued them up to the control horns for each aileron and flap... THen marked the position for the control horns to be mounted..
The Flaps will be effective when landing this bird... check out the cool pre-installed split flaps!!!!

Tomas,

What were you sawing? There isn't anything on this plane to be sawed it there?

Please post some pictures of the inside of the fuse, for us that want to convert the bird to electic.

Looks good, so far.

Tomas,

OK, great, watching this build thread, this model I have in mind for my next assemble after I get this KMP B25 rolling. Using 2 RCV 91CD's in her. And I think it a great choice for the P40 as well. I had this kit (VQ P40) and sold it, as it was an older kit without washout, and I was not to happy that the cowl paint was 10 shades off the covering material tan. It appears a better match job paint wise on your model, looked cheezie on the first run kits and ruined its appearance.

They may have someone who is not color blind at the factory now and that is good. . OK get busy....

Jim

I think Sussex Model Centre distributes them under the Air Loisirs (?) brand.

Hey Nem,
Are you going to use a 3 blade Al spinner and prop instead of that ugly beige one in the box? If so what size prop?

I ended up lashing out and buying a YS 110. (Darn RichardL)!!
Just can't get past his P-40.

Next, I took the CJM (Century Jet Model) Retracts out and checked for clearance in the retract bay area... I used a black marker to show the area to be removed... I just used a razor saw on my X-ACTO knife to remove that area so the air cylinder would be able to fit... I also removed the factory installed bellcrank by working it loose with a pair of pliers.. don't need them since I am using pneumatic retracts instead of mechanicals....

Look how nice those retracts fit ....No adjustments needed to the retracts...CJM manufactures this set already sized specifically for the VQ P-40...
VQ WARBIRDS offers the CJM VQ-P40 retracts at a discount as well as a set of mechanical rotating retracts with working oleo struts when you order your P-40...

I will be using ROBART 3" Scale Treaded wheels for my VQ P-40 instead of the supplied foam wheels... I prefer the cool looking tread pattern and wheel covers...
