Strobe Landing Runway lights

Howdy All

Im not sure if this is the right place....

I would like to make myself an "ALSF-1 = Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights"

Like This http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approach_lighting_system

I would only need about 20 lights on the system.

Its only a small scale, my runway will only been 8 Meters long.

Has anyone got and uselful links on how to make one?

Im not that great with electris, i know the basics i guess...

My idea would be to get a motor with a cam on the end and each time it rotates it would hit a push switch making contact and getting the same effect!

I know there is a modern electrical way to do it but i just need some help please

thank you

Can I ask why? This system only helps if you are in the plane flying...

Amazing what you'd find doing a google search for "20 LED sequencer"...

or

or you could do it easily with a microcontroller...

If your doing FPV flying at night then you should also use infrared LEDs in the line up as cameras can see them far better at distance.

Yes its for FPV

I did read about the IR Led's But im only using them for dusk flying, not for Night time black outs!

Also Its a bit of fun!

Thanks for the Links!

Im sure stuff is quite easy to search for when you know what you are looking for! I'm not clued up all that well with electrics!

There are rope lights that have a "chasing sequence" that may work for you. I have no idea of what the distance is between lights though. Big box hardware stores have them in the electrical section.

I think you might ask in a bar, pub or disco where they get them. They're popular in those types of places in the US and they might just be in the UK as well.

If you just want flashing not chasing, get 2 sets of these, set one to flash and one steady. That should catch your attention when coming in to land

there is a cool IC chip I used to used when I needed a sequence of lights called a Johnson Counter, also called a Decade Counter. Its generic number was 4017. It will sequence 10 outputs, and can be cascaded with a small amount of outside logic. Pretty sure it does need an oscillator to drive it, like a 555 IC. Plug the chip number into Google. I'll bet its pretty close to what you're looking for.
