Keeping the airframe lightweight has to be your primary build goal. Despite my tendency to overbuild I can still get them fairly light, my SD delta despite being fully sheathed came out at the same weight as a film covered stock one.

My response is very simplistic this site has some very good insight into building and design considerations and there effect on performance.
