Thanks John.
Got a great forcast for this weekend but tied up doing other things. Why is it that life gets in the way of DS ???

Neal and I went out to the coast on Sunday and got a few circuits in relatively light winds (started out about 15kts and got to about 22kts+)

The flax was good for dropping aircraft into, but Neal found a nice manuka tree to land the Sunbird in (no damage)

Speaking of the Sunbird Neal...it sounded like it had a bag of rocks knocking around in it's belly every time it went through the boundary layer...I had to stop the camera more than once, because I was laughing so hard at the sound of it.

I had the JW cruising along at just over 100mph (only got a slow flight on video though) and Neal got the Sunbird up aroung the 120mph mark.

It was a really fun session and great to get out on the slope again,

Roll on the winter winds!

PS. the second vid has a bit of frontside (huge lift coming up the cliff)

Today, we decided to try Long Gully as the wind was on the lighter side and NW and i am still getting over a nasty cold which would have been made worse trying to climb up to Ngaio. Upon getting there, we found ourselves having to pay for entry ($20 each) even though the farmer has previously let us in for free - he normally only charges for the dirt-bike riders. We decided to continue and Jono went to pay.

The air early on was pretty light and smooth. I got some good laps in with my Reaper getting 119. We tried different foamies over the day but nothing got over 126. I decided to try my carbon destiny and give it its maiden DS flight. It mostly lumbered around in the 110-120 range, and as good air went through i got it up to 148, but no more. Then back to the low 100s again.

As the day went on the wind must have turned more North, as it got pretty patchy and very inconsistent. We had a smack 60 furball, but before Jono joined in, a little bird came down and joined in the circuit with my Smack60. I couldnt quite tell if it was trying to scare my big bad foamie away, or whether it was joining in on the fun. Either way it was funny watching it DS with me...

Two birds (2 min 11 sec)

Carbon Destiny @148mph (1 min 45 sec)

I was supposed to be studying today but I thought an opportunity to fly with Alex was worth taking a short study break, so Alex Pete and headed up to Ngaio for a hour or two. It started off smooth but not much power and we tested the air with a Smack 60 getting 130mph ish. Then Pete flew his light Reaper and although it looked faster, Pete was having trouble with the elevator rates and "landed" it down the backside a bit.

While Pete was recovering Alex and I decided that there MIGHT be enough breeze to launch the Scorcher. I decided that it was a go and launched it while Alex flew it. Alex quickly had it over the back and within minutes had it over the site record. Alex topped out at 253mph in what had become changeable conditions, one minute rough and the next smooth. I had a quick DS but it was a bit rough for me so decided to wait for better conditions.

Next up was my RT42. Alex pushed for a while trying for 150mph just waiting for the good air. When the "good" air arrived banged out 164 with out much trouble.

We headed back down the hill and I dropped Alex off at the airport after seeing the site record demolished and my Scorcher finally getting some action.

Great work guys! I had the impression that the wind was howling- Im impressed with the speed from not huge wind. Must be a good site. Im keen to see what you reckon of Jonno's Scorcher compared to your heavy one Alex.
PS, the paint looks unreal Jonno- you did a great job of the repair

It always sounds windy there because you are standing in the wind where you fly from.

The orange that I added is much brighter than it looks in the photos and I added it because I was having a bit of a problem seeing the Schorcher in the air with our yellow gorse bushes in the background. I also did not have the same yellow to match after the repair.

I still prefer fluoro green and white with black contrast for visibility. Is my favourite, but the scorcher was pretty good to see. Was late in the day with sun over the front but not over the back as you can see. Was maybe 40mph wind at the strongest about 35kts. Probably around the 30 mark most of the time.

This scorcher will be the one that gets to 350 first

Makes me chuckle reading about Alex fronting up at a new site and busting the records. Sorry for you Jonno - you have your work cut out now to get back on the board! 253 is fast particularly in those conditions!! Cheesh, 164 with the RT42 is orrright!!

So to clarify what I said earlier, it looked rough as guts but Alex made it look easy! Believe me when I say Ngaio is tough...

Getting beaten by Alex is an absolute constant in the universe. Worrying about it would be as useless as worrying about rain in the winter. It's always going to happen
253 should be doable on a good day, with a whole lot of luck....
My goal was always 257 anyway
