Futaba 18MZ

Futaba finally previewed a prototype of the upcoming 18MZ transmitter at the Shizuoka model show. Information posted on Futaba's facebook page:

Quote:
HUGE NEWS from the Shizuoka trade show in Japan this week. Futaba announced the 18MZ transmitter! Six years ago the 14MZ was introduced and it redefined what a transmitter could do for the pilot. Now, the 18MZ redefines this once again. Welcome to the world’s most advanced radio control transmitter! 18 channels, bidirectional FASSTest technology and a huge 640 x 240 LCD touch screen name just a few of its key features. Stay tuned for more details to come…
One thing I hope they improve on over the 14MZ is not just the size of the screen, but the touch screen response and screen display quality. Something comparable to Apple's iPhone4 retina display would be nice!

Oh and also the power consumption of these monsters need to be in check. I literally go through a 14MZ TX battery in just a monrning of flying. Hope they have something larger planned for the 18MZ.

Thats a sharp looking screen, too bad you cant fly FPV from it.

Its also supposed to be Futabas first telemetry radio.

Yeah, a backlit screen like that is going to burn through a battery pretty quickly. Something like the Epic phone screen would probably save a little more juice. Maybe it'll have a timed lighting option like the 8FG.

I'm more of a practical consumer than one who buys stuff based on flashy bling. Functionality and capability for the price is what's important to me.

Let me know when they make the 8FG telemetry capable...

The current 14MZ does have a backlight idle timeout setting, along with idle to shutoff time setting. But the real problem is the small battery capacity restricted by semi-proprietary form factor, preventing user from doing any type of upgrade.

That screen does look really sharp compared to the 14MZ.

Latest info on the new 18MZ

http://www.futaba-rc.com/systems/18mz.html

Most recent word I get is October.

One note: it has a 3,500 mAh LIPO pack in it and the new screen is reportedly less power hungry than the 14MZ screen.

OCTOBER!! I'm going to have a very hard time waiting for that long. Better have myself frozen, then have someone thaw me out when it's available so I can buy it. October, great, just as the flying season ends.

Well, what can I say? You could always move to Australia and just be ramping up the flying season when it hits the market!! But even if you don't, I am still fairly confident that it will still be the preeminent radio come the spring

I'm not really one for large touch screens and the like, but the capabilities of the radio do seem pretty impressive, I must say.
