Restored B-29 Superfortress Rolls out of Wichita Hangar

Looks like they'll be 2 flying B-29's by the end of the year.

The B-29 Superfortress was one of a squadron of eight planes named for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This one is known as “Doc.” The aircraft was built in 1945 by Boeing in Wichita. The Wichita plant built 1,644 B-29s and about 125 additional B-29s in equivalent spare parts. That was nearly 65 percent of the total number of B-29s built by Boeing plants in Wichita and in Renton, Wash.

A B-29 Superfortress known as “Doc” rolled out of a former Boeing Wichita hangar on March 23, 2015, following 15 years and 300,000 hours of work by scores of volunteers.

The bomber, built by Boeing in Wichita in 1945, had been parked in the California Mojave desert for 42 years. The aircraft was discovered in 1987 and, in 2000, was trucked to Wichita where restoration began. The project went through a hiatus, the victim of a poor economy and lack of hangar space, when a group of Wichita business leaders and aviation enthusiasts formed a nonprofit group called Doc’s Friends and restarted the restoration. Boeing donated the hangar space.

The plan is to restore the aircraft to flying condition, and it will be one of only two to be flyable. Doc is expected to fly in the next couple of months. The next step is to secure a permanent home in Wichita for the aircraft and to operate the B-29 as a flying museum. Organizers estimate it will take another $7 million to $9 million to finish restoration and secure permanent hangar space.

Awesome--a fitting tribute to those who served (including on the home front), and I love seeing these restorations. Thanks for posting!

I like pic 7 in the gallery where the lady is pointing to the rivets she put in when she was 18 years old and those rivets are still there. Damn good job Connie!

This is great news. Thanks for posting,I'm going to make a donation to the project.
So many aircraft were lost to neglect or used as targets.
I helped restore a B-36 Peacekeeper for the state of Texas and there was no shortage of volunteers. Keep' em flying.

As part of the 352nd FG's 2005 reunion in Wichita, KS, we got to visit "Doc" being restored. Glad to see she's almost ready to fly again!!!

I'll have to dig through my picture discs but I'm almost certain I have some shots of it on jacks being worked on.

The nose art of Doc was repainted by the same painter that originally painted it. Owen Hughes, at the tender age of 96 is looking forward to seeing it fly and then receiving a ride in that beautiful ship.
