3DHS 91" Yak 55 Build Thread
Hey guys, just got back from picking up my shiny new 3DHS 60cc Yak 55! FedEx freight called this morning to set up an appointment for delivery and couldn't do it till tomorrow. Well, I didn't want to wait so I went and picked it up. DADDY... I want an Oompa Loompa NOW...
Anyway, I figured I would start a build thread on the Yak 55. It just seems that the poor Yak isn't getting the love it deserves. Now, I wasn't a huge Yak 55 fan prior to seeing this one fly last year at the 3DHS Fly Low In. Joe and Wamsey tore up the sky with the gas and the electric Yaks. It tracked like it was on rails, and it's massive rudder gave huge yaw authority. I was hooked! Besides, I already have a 3DHS 74" Edge and I LOVE it. It was a hard decision, but I went for something different. This is my first 50cc size build, so to say I'm excited is an understatement. I had an AWESOME day flying my 74" Edge yesterday and it just upped the ante for this plane.
I do wish the the red/yellow/blue scheme would have made it to production, but oh well. I plan on adding some graphic bling to spice up the blue. I have a vinyl cutter that needs some exercise and I really want this thing to pop! Some of the stuff that's being done with the white Edges is very inspiring.
This one is going to be set up as an electric. I contemplated going gas, but I got rid of all my glow/gas stuff years ago. I would have had to get all the support equipment again and that would have added expense. I already have all the electric support stuff so it was a no-brainer. Besides, this big electric stuff is getting very cool very fast! The 108" Edge that Joe has been flying on electric is wicked!
On with the show...
Major components that are going into the build:
Motrolfly DM5335 175kv
ZTW Gecko 150 amp Opto ESC
(4) Hitec HS-7954HR servos on Elev and Aileron
Hitec HS-7956SHR on the rudder
Spektrum AR9110 PowerSafe receiver
Xoar 24x10 and Xoar 24x12 props (I'll start off with the 10" pitch)
(2) 6s 5000mAh Glacier lipos in series.
Everything has been ordered and I'm waiting on delivery. I'm hoping I get the motor soon, but Ken said he is a bit behind on his winding. I need the motor to figure out what size to have the standoffs made. I also ordered some other components for some added "bling" and I'll add those to the list as they come in.
Everything was packaged well and no shipping damage was present on the packaging upon pick-up. Kuddos to FedEx. I've only done a cursory look at all the parts as I unboxed it. So far everything looks FLAWLESS! Hats off to Ben and his team. This took ARF to the next level for sure. The build quality is superb. I did do an "unboxing" video I'll probably post sometime soon. Once I get it edited, I'll post a link.
Tonight is Cub Scout night, so I've gotta make this quick. I figured I'd get this thread rolling and start posting a few pics.
Cheers and Happy Yak Day!

Nice!!! I did the same today and ran to Fedex to pick up my 92" edge. Couldn't wait.
There was an issue with the labeling of the box and I received the wrong color. Not complaining though. Got a blue TS one!!!!
