My Blimp

Hello everyone!

Some of you may remember my posts/questions on making a blimp. well I have made my own custom blimp that uses readily available parts from the LHS. Photos can be seen Here It uses two modified hs-300 servos controlling one edp-20a motor/prop each. Uses a 5cell 300mah nimh battery from hobbico. AUW 2.1 oz. As far as the Main blimp bag part is concerned, I will be ordering that soon and will post videos and pictures when that part of the project is completed. What do you think?

Sorry I could not get you video to work.
Not sure of you setup
How many servos do you have 2 . How do you control up/down
front/back, left/right. How far is the rotation of the fan units. Differential thrust?
I need to study you photos some more be for I get really disgusted.

Keep up the good work

Larry

WOW! I am definately speachless (well - you get the point! )
So - does the servo control the angle of the motor, or how does this work? So this is a heli type of thing more than a blimp, or what? Does it have an inflatable balloon?

I had no problems with the video.

Thanks!!!!!

From the video, I can see how you control pitch. How do you control yaw? Differential thrust?

yes, yaw is done by differential thrust between the two motors, and also note that the unit is upside down and is not attached to the main blimp bag, which i still have to order. As far as altitude is concerned, i use an hs-55 servo. I have pics of this linkage system loading as you read this. these little edps are great, draw very little amperage < 1/2a, and put out decent thrust (~17g @6v) i know for a vehicle that will weight "nothing" and has very little mass, it may seem like a little bit much to have roughly one ounce of thrust between the two motors, but i was aiming to have complete control with power to spare. I forgot to mention that the whole frame it made up of .040 size carbonfibre rod, wrapped with unwaxed dental floss resulting in a frame that weighed something like 5gms. anything else you wanna ask? I am so glad that you all are so amazed with my simple contraption

Very interesting. How big will the bag be and what is your source of helium?

Helium source : Friend from school who works at a partyshop

bag length is 48 inches, I plan on making a much smaller blimp (< 2 feet long) when the wallet recovers

And how will you attached the bag to the frame? More dental floss? I assume the bag is the metallic type that retains gas for a long period.

the gondola will be attached with tape, maybe ducttape due to extra stickyness but scotch would so ok too i guess.

I suppose that achieving an equilibrium will require trial and error? Making it heavier is easy but what about making it lighter? Or do you think it will have more than enough lift?

the bag I will be using is said to lift 4 to 4.5 oz so my gondola's weight of 2.1 should definatley be accounted for It also gives me room to play with bombs/ tickets or even a very small camera

I think a blimp would be well suited for precision bombing runs. Sounds like fun! Good luck with the project.

avoid duct tape if you can!!!!!
Duct tape is heavy, and scotch works better in some situations that I have come across in micro. BTW, duct tape does NOT stick to balsa very well at all - worse than scotch.
